EUGENE, Ore.--The Oregon men's tennis team came up just short in a hard fought match against Sacramento State, suffering its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center, 4-3.
With the team scores even at three, No. 3 Mike Myrhed's comeback from a 5-2 third set deficit was denied by Artur Klimenka, as he won in a tiebreak, 2-6, 7-5, 6-6 (7-2) to win the match.
With the loss, Oregon falls to 3-1 on the season.
In other singles play, the Ducks were on both ends of blowouts, as Oregon's Stephen Wiechert rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ronan Conlon at the No. 6 spot and No. 2 Anton Stryhas won all but one game in beating Alexander Cornelissen 6-0, 6-1 for the Hornets.
The Ducks opened the match by winning the doubles point. The duos of Mike Myrhed and Cornelissen at the No. 2 spot and No. 3 Geoff Embry and Wiechert both came away victorious, and Oregon was able to overcome Marcos Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo's 3-8 loss to Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk at No. 1.
Verdasco played Harbatsiuk in singles as well, battling hard before eventually losing 2-6, 4-6.
Playing at the No. 5 spot for the first time this season, Oregon's Romeo Mortera saw a 5-2 second set lead slip away in his 3-6, 5-7 loss to Holden Ching.
Next Saturday, February 2nd, Oregon will play host for the fifth consecutive time to start the season, facing Cal Poly at 2 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center. After that, the Ducks are slated for six straight matches away from Eugene.
