Ducks' Comeback Falls Short In Tucson
01/31/08 | Women's Basketball
TUCSON, Ariz. ? Arizona senior Ashley Whisonant scored 20 second-half points, leading her Arizona Wildcats to a 65-60 victory over Oregon at the McKale Center on Thursday night.
The Ducks, who trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, cut the Wildcats lead to two points twice in the final 1:30, but could not come closer than that.
Whisonant, a fourth-year senior, scored 22 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor, and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.
The Ducks (10-11, 4-6) have now lost three consecutive games for the first time this season ? all three defeats have come on the road and each have been within a five-point margin.
Arizona now improves to 8-13 overall and 2-8 in the Pac-10, winners of two of their last three.
Ify Ibekwe added 16 for Arizona, including 12 in the first half.
The Ducks were troubled by Arizona's full-court pressure, turning the ball over 16 times, as the Wildcats scored 16 points off those turnovers. Arizona also outscored Oregon 38-26 in the paint, and outrebounded the Ducks 36-26.
Another telling statistic was Arizona's 15-of-22 performance from the free-throw line, obtaining 10 more attempts than Oregon. The Wildcats also scored 16 second-chance points.
Sophomore guard Taylor Lilley led Oregon with 22 points, on an 8-of-11 performance from the floor, including five three pointers. The Ducks also shot 44.0 percent from the floor.
This was the Wildcats first win over the Ducks in their last four attempts.
After Arizona's Amina Njonkou was charged with a foul on the offensive end, Oregon senior Kaela Chapdelaine made her pay, draining a three-pointer to cut the Wildcats' lead to 60-58 with 1:19 to go.
An Oregon steal by Chapdelaine led to a breakaway layup for Micaela Cocks, cutting Arizona's lead to 58-53 with 3:13 on the clock.
It was Whisonant's first and only three-pointer of the game that built Arizona's advantage to double-digits, 50-40, as 10:44 remained. It was part of a 7-1 Wildcat run.
The Wildcats opened the second half scoring the first four points, while also troubling Oregon's offense with a full-court press. The Ducks didn't score until Lilley sank a three-pointer with 14:37 to go.
Arizona ended the first half on a 9-3 run, but Lilley cut in half what appeared to be a six-point halftime advantage for the Wildcats, when she knocked down a three-pointer from five feet behind the arc as the buzzer sounded.
Arizona's 34-31 halftime lead was aided by Ibekwe's 12 first-half points, on a perfect 5-for-5 performance. The Wildcats were also 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.
With under two minutes to go until the break, the Ducks lost composure temporarily on defense, allowing three consecutive Arizona makes under the basket, including a converted three-point play, as well as a second chance opportunity that gave the Wildcats a 32-28 advantage with 1:04 remaining.
Lilley scored Oregon's first five points, helping the Ducks to an 11-8 lead, but Arizona countered with an 8-2 run, putting the Wildcats ahead, 16-13, with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Chapdelaine tied the game at 23-23, driving through the lane uncontested after an Arizona turnover on the offensive end.
During the first game, there were 13 lead changes and five tie scores.
Lilley led the Ducks at the half with eight points, as Oregon shot 46.2 percent from the floor.
Oregon next travels to Tempe, matching up with Arizona State on Saturday with a 10 a.m. PST start (11 a.m. MT). The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net, and as always, Oregon fans can listen to Terry Jonz's broadcast of the game on KSCR 1320 (also available on the O-Zone). Duck basketball fans can also follow live stats on www.GoDucks.com or www.The SunDevils.com.
QUICK QUACKS: Lilley's 22-point effort marked the fifth time this season (fourth in Pac-10) the she eclipsed 20 points...the Ducks were without freshman point guard Nia Jackson for the third straight game as she continues to nurse a right quad strain.
