Hawaiian Maekawa Leads Ducks in the Islands

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii ? Native Hawaiian Sean Maekawa shot a 3-under 67 Wednesday to lead Oregon to eighth place following the first round of the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate, being played at the par-72, 6,971-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
Oregon's first round total of 1-under 279 was eight strokes off the lead of 9-under 271, set by both Arizona State and No. 16 Texas Tech. Oregon State was third at 273, with No. 8 USC (274), No. 4 Georgia Tech (275), No. 10 Stanford (275) and Oklahoma (277) ahead of the Ducks.
Maekawa, one of three freshmen in the line-up for Oregon, was tied for eighth. The Ducks also counted a 70 from freshman Jack Dukeminier and 71s from Derek Sipe and Isaiah Telles.
Arizona State's Stephan Gross led the individual race at 6-under 64, a stroke better than Rob Grube of Stanford and Cameron Tringle of Georgia Tech.
