Freshmen Lead Ducks to Eighth in Hawaii

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii ? Oregon's three freshmen all placed in the top 26 to lead the Ducks to an eighth-place finish, the school's best showing at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate in seven years.
Sean Maekawa, a freshman from Pa'auilo, Hawaii, covered the par-70, 6,971-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Course in an even par 70 Friday to finish tied for 23rd at 1-under 209.
Freshmen Jack Dukeminier and Isaiah Telles both shot 71s Friday to finish tied for 26th at even par 210. Both are from Oregon, Dukeminier from Salem and Telles from Tualatin.
Also for the Ducks, senior Joey Benedetti shot a 70 to tie for 39th at 212 and senior Derek Sipe carded a 69 to tie for 47th at 213.
The eighth place finish was Oregon's best at the Hilo tournament since taking fourth in 2001.
No. 10 Stanford won the event by closing with a 5-under 275. The Cardinal's 813 total was three strokes better than No. 8 USC and Arizona State, which tied for second at 816. No. 4 Georgia Tech was fourth at 824 with No. 16 Texas Tech fifth at 829.
Washington and Oregon State tied for sixth at 832. Oregon shot a 5-under 835 to take eighth. Texas Christian (839) and UC Davis (844) rounded out the top 10.
Arizona State's Jesper Kennegard took individual medalist honors by shooting a final round 66 to finish at 13-under 197. Kennegard was two strokes better than Stanford teammates Rob Grube and Sihwan Kim.
