Ducks Complete Sweep with 5-2 Win Over Huskies

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team started its spring break by knocking off two ranked opponents during the last two days. The Ducks completed their sweep of the visiting Washington schools after a 5-2 victory over the No. 35 Huskies on Monday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. On Sunday, it was the No. 38 Washington State Cougars who fell, 7-0.
Oregon is now 10-8 on the season and 3-1 in the Pac-10. The Huskies are now 10-6 overall and still looking for their first Pac-10 win at 0-5.
Oregon freshman Celine Rolly defeated her second ranked opponent in as many days, knocking off No. 30 Venise Chan, 6-4, 6-2, at the top spot. Rolly is now 10-8 on the year for the Ducks playing in the No. 1 singles spot.
Junior Carmen Seremeta also prevailed for the second straight day with a hard-fought three-set, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-1, win over Washington's Aleksandra Malovic. Seremeta continues to lead Oregon with a 12-6 singles record in 2008.
The freshman class continued its success as Stephanie Macfarlane won for the second straight day in the No. 4 spot. The native of Melbourne, Australia dropped her first set, but battled back to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Joyce Ardies.
The Ducks final singles win came at the No. 6 spot as Ana Cecilia Olivos defeated the Huskies' Kelsey Anonsen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 .
Washington's No. 99 Tara Simpson defeated Oregon's sole senior Anna Powaska, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7) at the No. 3 spot of the lineup, while Vanja Radunovic also scored a win for the Huskies, defeating Claudia Hirt, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
For the second straight match, Oregon also took the doubles point as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams registered wins. The tandem of Hirt and Seremeta pulled through with a 9-8 (5) win over Anonsen and Chan at No. 2, while Powaska and Rolly were victorious, 8-5, at No.1 over Washington's team of Ardies and Simspn.
Oregon's No. 3 tandem of Macfarlane and Olivos fell to Malovic and Radunovic at No. 3.
Oregon now hits the road to square off with USC at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The Ducks will then play at UCLA at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
