Men?s Golf Moves up Two Spots in Final Round at USC

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. ? Senior Joey Benedetti birdied his last four holes Tuesday to help Oregon climb two spots in the final standings of the 30th annual USC Collegiate Invitational.

Oregon shot its best round of the tournament Tuesday, a 10-over 294, to finish 11th overall. Benedetti's rally helped him shoot a 1-over 72 in the final round, played at the par-71, 6,869 North Ranch Country Club, to become Oregon's high individual finisher. The Huntington Beach, Calif., tied for 30th at 15-over 228.

USC held off Tennessee to win the team title by four strokes. The Volunteers shot a 1-over 285 Tuesday, but USC's 10-over 294 was enough to win, 885-889. Stanford was third at 890 with Pepperdine (898) and California (899) rounding out the top five.

Brigham Young and Washington tied for sixth at 902, Loyola Marymount was eighth at 903, Oklahoma took ninth at 907 and Oregon State was 10th at 911.

The Ducks' final round 294 lifted them to 11th at 913, ahead of Notre Dame (925), UCLA (932) and Fresno State (934).

Oregon freshman Sean Maekawa shot a team-best 71 Tuesday and finished tied for 34th overall at 229.

Tim Sluiter of USC, competing as an individual, won medalist honors by carding a 1-under 70 in the final round for a 5-over 218 total. He was one shot better than the Trojans' Matt Giles and two better than four individuals tied at 220 -- Sihwan Kim and Dodge Kemmer of Stanford, Josh Sandman of Notre Dame and Chris Paisley of Tennessee.
