Oregon Can't Capitalize On Doubles Win In 6-1 Loss To Cal
04/11/08 | Men's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Oregon men's tennis team started well on Friday by winning the doubles point, but the Ducks couldn't sustain that success in singles action, falling 6-1 to 36th-ranked California at the Hellman Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Ducks fall to 11-12 on the year and remain winless in the Pac-10 with a record of 0-5. The No. 36 Golden Bears improve to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
The team of sophomores Geoff Embry and Romeo Mortera got Oregon started with a quick 8-1 victory over Cal's pair of Eoin Heavey and Kallim Stewart on court No. 2. The Bears quickly evened the score as Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini defeated Oregon's Alex Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco, 8-6, on court No. 1.
But the Ducks persevered as Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert won in dramatic fashion, 9-8 (5), on court No. 3 over Pierre Mouillon and Bozhidar Kastarov. It was the first doubles point Oregon has won in Pac-10 duals this season.
After success in doubles action, Oregon was unable to relay that to the singles court, and the Ducks were swept.
Stewart, currently the 92nd-ranked player in the nation, defeated Marcos Verdasco, 6-4, 6-3 on court No. 1, while Mouillon beat Gallardo, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (6) at the second spot of the lineup.
At the third spot, Cal's Heavey defeated Oregon's Cornelissen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, and on court No. 4, Zerbini outlasted Embry 6-2, 6-3.
Katsarov handled Mortera, 6-2, 7-6 (8) at No. 5, and Cal's Ken Nakahara defeated Mike Myrhed 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (11) at No. 6.
Oregon remains on the road and will play No. 28 Stanford at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
