Sipe Helps Ducks Climb a Spot at ASU Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. ? Senior Derek Sipe fired a 3-under 68 Saturday to help Oregon shoot a 3-under 281 and move up to fifth following the second round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational being played at the par-71, 7,057-yard Karsten Golf Course.
Sipe, from Yorba Linda, Calif., was tied for fourth at 3-under 139 and was just three stokes back of second round leader Kyle Nielsen of New Mexico. Nielson, who had a share of he first round lead, carded a 1-under 70 on Saturday to stand at 6-under 136. Sipe finished second at the 2007 ASU Thunderbird to lead the Ducks to the team title. He had four birdies an eagled the par-5 17th on Saturday.
Arizona State was the only team to shoot a lower second round score than Oregon. The Sun Devils had their second straight 5-under 279 and led the tournament at 10-under.
Arizona State's B team was second at 565, with Colorado State (568) and Denver just ahead of Oregon's 572. No. 17 Texas A&M was sixth at 576 with Baylor and Arizona tied for seventh at 579.
Oregon freshman Jack Dukeminier carded a 1-over 72 Saturday and was tied for ninth at 1-under 141 after being tied for eighth after the first round. The Ducks also got a 1-under 70 from senior Joey Benedetti, who was tied for 21st overall at 2-over 144.
