NORMAN, Okla. ? In its 14th postseason trip in school history, the University of Oregon softball team lost its NCAA Regional opener Friday evening to No. 7 Oklahoma, 6-0, at Marita Hynes Field at the OU Softball Complex.
The Ducks (33-28) gave up two runs to the Sooners in the first inning, then four more in the fifth. OU's junior starter D.J. Mathis, an All-Big 12 and Region First Team pick, cruised in the complete game shutout with six strikeouts and allowed two walks and three hits.
UO's best chance to score came in the seventh inning when sophomore Neena Bryant led off with a single over the pitcher's head, and senior Joanna Gail next rapped a single to left field. The next batter, freshman Monique Fuiava, screamed a sinking liner to left field on a 2-2 pitch, but the left fielder raced in and dove to make the catch for the first out. A pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
“They're a good ball club and we didn't do enough to beat them,” Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. “They showed that they have nice speed and power and some timely hitting, but we weren't surprised.”
The host Sooners (56-8) led off the first inning with three straight singles ? the third of which scored a run. Two batters later, another single to left field scored another run.
OU added four more runs in the fifth inning. After runners got on via a walk and single with one out, Sooner batters collected RBIs via two singles and a double, and another run came home on a wild pitch by starter Alicia Cook (16-13). After three runs had scored, junior Melissa Rice came in to relieve Cook and got the final two outs of the inning.
“It was one of those days where everything they did went right,” Cook said. “They had great pitching, hitting and defense, and that's what we'll do tomorrow.”
In the second inning, senior Kayleen Hudson collected UO's lone hit in the first six innings when she singled up the middle with two outs.
UO's leadoff hitter Sari-Jane Jenkins also advanced via a walk in the third inning ? her team-leading 34th of the season that ranks fourth all-time for UO, and only three behind third (37).
On the mound, Cook struck out two in her 4.1 innings, gave up 10 hits, and all six of her runs allowed were earned. She now has 152 strikeouts for the season ? seventh-best for UO in a season, and only one shy of sixth (153).
The Ducks continue their fifth postseason appearance under Arendsen Saturday and face Tulsa (34-24) at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time / 3:30 p.m. Central Time. The winner of the UO-Tulsa game will play again immediately after on Saturday in the double-elimination format, and will face the loser of Saturday's Oklahoma-Arkansas game. The Razorbacks (37-27) won their opener Friday, 7-5, over Tulsa.
Friday's Regional opener was in familiar confines for many UO players. The Ducks also traveled to the Norman regional in 2005, and lost in the final to Oklahoma, 2-1. In that series, UO opened with a 7-5 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette, then came back with a pair of wins the second day, a 3-2 in eight innings over Wichita State, and 3-1 over Louisiana-Lafayette.
A live radio broadcast of Saturday's Duck game (s) will again be on KSCR 1320-AM and will feature Joe Giansante and Terry Jonz, and will also be available online to www.GoDucks.com subscribers.
