10/23/09 | Men's Golf
LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Andrew Vijarro shot a 69 to tie for eighth at 5-under par to lead No. 19 Oregon Friday in the final round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate.
After teams completed their second round, which was suspended due to darkness on Thursday, Oregon held second place, but slipped with a 1-over 351 in the final round to take third at 8-under 1042. Colorado State won the tournament at 1030, while host Long Beach State used a 14-under 336 in the final round to claim second at 1039.
Vijarro continued his strong play this fall. He finished under par in all three rounds for a 205 total. The sophomore from Bend, Ore., recorded three birdies on his final four holes to earn his second straight top-10 finish.
Michael Drake of Long Beach State fired a final round 66 to win the tournament at 11-under 199 at the par-70, 6,578-yard Virginia County Club. Riley Arp of Colorado State and Scott Travers of Santa Clara tied for second at 201.
Other individuals for Oregon included sophomore Eugene Wong, who tied for 13th at 207 after a final round 71. Sophomore Daniel Miernicki closed with a 69 to tie for 21st at 209. Junior Sean Maekawa tied for 26th at 211.
The tournament varied from the usual collegiate format, as teams played six golfers and counted the best five scores, which is also the format used at the Pacific-10 Championships. Most college tournaments, including the NCAA Regionals and Championships, use a 5-count-4 scoring format.
Oregon will wrap the fall season at the Nov. 2-4 Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
