Oregon Wraps Up USAFA Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Oregon women's tennis team kicked off the fall tournament season at the USAFA Invitational over the weekend and a pair of Ducks played for titles.
In the Delta-4 bracket Pavlina Smatova took a first round bye and won
her next two matches over Utah's Paige Miles and Air Force's Sarah
Cassman. Smatova fell to Harvard's Kristin Norton in the title match, 7-6(4), 6-3.
The Ducks also had a
representative in the Eco-5 bracket championship where Julia Metzger dropped a tough match to Wyoming's Sasa Nemcova, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Her road to the title match
included wins over Air Force's Christine Molina, Utah's Andrea Maughan
and Idaho State's Arianna Maack.
In the Alpha-1 bracket, freshman Sabine Fuchs dropped her opening round match 6-3, 6-2 to Colorado State's Laura Neal and she lost her consolation match to North Carolina's Tabatha Knop 7-6 (3), 6-3.
In the Bravo-2 bracket sophomore Trudie du Toit had a bye to the second round where she lost to Utah's Erin Monson. Du Toit rebounded to win her consolation match 7-6(8), 6-1 against New Mexico's Anya Villanueava and took fifth place with a win over Colorado State's Tori Amerson on Sunday.
In the Charlie-3 bracket Emmanuelle Cor fell 6-4, 6-0 to Wyoming's Kim Can Ginkel and lost her consolation round match on Sunday morning.
Molly M'Devitt won her opening round match in the Foxtrot-6 bracket over Idaho State's Carmen Peters but fell in her next match. She lost in the third place match for her bracket to Air Force's Hannah Dake.
In the Golf-7 bracket Mahdi Besovic dropped her opening round match but rebounded in the consolation bracket, defeating North Carolina's Jenny Whateley 7-5, 7-5 but retired in the first set against Colorado State's Lauren Mulhern on Sunday.
In doubles play the pairing of Smatova and Cor came away with a title in the 2-Dbs bracket, where they rattled off three straight wins to clinch the championship.
In 1-Dbs bracket, Fuchs and du Toit posted a record of 3-1 to take fifth in their division.
