EASTERN WASHINGTON PREVIEW
The Eagles will officially open their season Saturday (Nov. 14) when they play at Portland. Eastern Washington returns eight of 12 letterwinners from last year's team that finished 10-19 overall and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference. Five of the returning players are starters, and that helped translate to impressive exhibition victories. The Eagles defeated Central Washington 101-49 on Nov. 3, and Warner Pacific 69-46 on Nov. 7.
The Ducks lead the series with the Eagles, 5-0, with the last meeting a 79-54 victory on Dec. 28, 1990 in Portland. The last meeting in Eugene, resulted in a 75-56 UO win on March 11, 1987 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
MONTANA PREVIEW
Montana opens its regular season with a pair of road games at Colorado State on Friday, Nov. 13, and Wyoming on Sunday, Nov. 15. Montana returns two starters and six other letterwinners from last year's 28-5 team that won the Big Sky Conference regular-season and tournament titles, advancing to the program's 18th NCAA tournament.
For the first time since the 1999-2000 season, Montana is not the outright choice or co-favorite to win the Big Sky Conference in voting by the league's coaches. The conference coaches tabbed last year's runner-up, Portland State, as this year's favorite, with seven of nine first-place votes.
Montana won its lone exhibition game last Sunday at Dahlberg Arena, 77-57 over Idol Sports. The Ducks hold a 10-3 series advantage over the Grizzlies, but last season suffered a 60-52 loss at Mac Court on Dec. 4. The last time the Ducks were in Missoula, Mont., they left with a 65-60 win on Dec. 19, 2002.
PRESEASON POLL
Oregon was selected to finish eighth in the both the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll as well as the Pac-10 Preseason Media Poll.
The results are not a surprise citing UO's finish to the 2008-09 season which included dropping its final six games of the season and losing 10 of the final 11 tilts of the year.
UO CURRENT STATUS
Oregon enters the season with a new head coach and new philosophy. With the legendary Paul Westhead instilling the “speed game” the Ducks have been preparing since the spring for the 2009-10 season.
The Ducks return nine letterwinners from last season, including four starters. Oregon also returns redshirt sophomore guard Nia Jackson. The Seattle native was sorely missed last season after surgery for a torn left ACL left her unable to play. UO also welcomes in four newcomers, junior college transfers Kristi Fallin and Candyce Flynn as well as two freshmen out of Portland, Laura Stanulis (Sunset HS) and Aliyah Green (Jefferson HS).
AVAILABILITY STATUS
Oregon will have 12 of its 14 players available for Monday's season opener. The Ducks will be without freshman Aliyah Green, who is still returning from an ACL injury suffered in her right knee during her senior season at Jefferson High School. Green's return date is unknown at this time.
On Monday, the squad will also be without sophomore guard/forward Jasmin Holliday, who is home in Southern California tending to a family matter. Her availability for Sunday's (Nov. 22) game at Montana has not been decided yet.
EXHIBITION SEASON
Oregon unveiled its uptempo offense and fullcourt pressure defense in two exhibition games last week. The Ducks clipped the century mark in both contests, defeating Southern Oregon, 109-47 (Nov. 3), and Western Oregon, 109-65 (Nov. 8).
The Ducks were led by a pair of sophomores; forward Amanda Johnson and point guard Nia Jackson. Johnson averaged 22.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game, shooting .588 (20-of-34) from the floor.
Jackson averaged 19.0 points, playing 19.0 minutes per game. She shot .720 (18-of-25) from the floor, and averaged 4.5 assists and 4.5 steals per game.
Senior guard Micaela Cocks, a Pac-10 Third team selection a year ago, averaged 19.0 points per game on 16-of-31 (.516) shooting.
As a team, the Ducks outscored their opponents by an average of 53.0 points per game...Oregon hoisted 2.4 shots per minute...the Ducks shot .497 (94-of-189) from the floor....Oregon outrebounded its opponents by 18.5 boards per game...the Ducks averaged 24.0 assists per game and forced 40.0 turnovers per game...in both games, four starters reached double figures.
RECORDS IN JEOPARDY
With the senior guard combination of Micaela Cocks and Taylor Lilley patrolling the three-point line, it's no doubt that some records are in jeopardy heading into the season.
Lilley's 146 career three-pointers rank fourth all-time in Oregon history, and in order to become the all-time leader, Lilley needs to knock down 44 for the record - surpassing Missy Croshaw (1990-94, 189). Lilley also has the chance to crack the top-10 for double-figure scoring games. Currently with 41 games of double-digit scoring, Lilley would need to hit double figures in 25 dates to crack the career top-10.
Cocks has the opportunity to claim two all-time records. Her current .855 (124-of-145) career free-throw percentage would set a new program record. In addition, if she sinks at least 70 three-pointers during her senior season, she could potentially become the program's all-time leader. Cocks' current .382 three-point field goal percentage ties for seventh all-time. If she played in a minimum of 26 games this year, Cocks could also crack the career games played top-10.
RETURN OF JACKSON
Sophomore Nia Jackson has returned to the floor as the starting point guard for Paul Westhead's high tempo offense. After missing last season after ACL surgery - an injury she suffered during the Ducks' international tour of Italy - Jackson looks primed to run UO's fast-paced offense and lead the aggressive full-court pressure defense. When Jackson was on the floor during both exhibition games, Oregon scored a combined 125 points, while allowing just 44.
WORLD VISION INVITATIONAL
Oregon is hosting the six-game World Vision Invitational at McArthur Court from Nov. 27-29, during the Thanksgiving weekend. Off the basketball floor, the goal of the tournament is to raise funds for the purchase of treated mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria. Malaria is the #4 killer of children under the age of 5 world wide. Watch UO's video to support the cause HERE.
