11/02/09 | Men's Golf
STOCKTON, Calif. ? Eugene Wong fired a 7-under 64 -- two shots off the school record -- to lead Oregon to a tie for first following the opening round of the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational, played Monday at the par-71, 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club.
Wong was one of three Ducks in the top 10 as Oregon stood tied for first at 11-under 273 along with UC Davis. Pacific was third at 278, Brigham Young was fourth at 279 and Saint Mary's was fifth at 280.
Wong, a sophomore from North Vancouver, B.C., had seven birdies and no bogeys, including a run of four straight birdies on holes six through nine in bettering his previous career low round by a stroke.
His 64 was the best round by a Duck since Derek Sipe set the school record with a 62 in 2007 at Waikoloa, Hawaii.
Wong was tied for the tournament lead with UC Davis' Tyler Raber.
Sophomores Andrew Vijarro and John Paton were tied for 10th at 2-under 69. Vijarro, from Bend, Ore., had seven birdies and five bogeys in his opening round. Paton, from Hillsborough, Calif., recorded four birdies and two bogeys.
The Ducks also counted a 71 from sophomore Sean Maekawa.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Tuesday.
