Ducks Post Fourth Straight Win, Top UAPB 73-53

EUGENE, Ore. -- Sophomore center Michael Dunigan posted a career-high 26 points to lead the University of Oregon men's basketball team to a 73-53 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday night at McArthur Court in Eugene. The win was the Ducks' fourth straight, improving their season mark to 8-4 overall. The Golden Lions dropped to 0-11 on the year.
Dunigan, from Chicago, Ill., made a career-best 10 field goals (10-of-14) and added five rebounds, three blocks and two steals in just 28 minutes of action. Senior guard Tajuan Porter had 15 points, going 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc. Sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead had 14 points, matched a career-best with eight assists and added a team-best three steals.
It was the first time all season that the Ducks won a game which they were out-rebounded, as UAPB finished with a 35-26 edge on the glass. Freshman forward E.J. Singler again posted a team-best in rebounds with seven, the third straight game he has led UO in rebounding. Four Golden Lions finished with four or more rebounds, led by Gavin Montgomery and Lebaron Weathers who both had five.
The Ducks shot 52.1 percent on field goals (25-of-48), while hitting 46.2 percent of their 3-pointers (6-of-13). UO went 17-of-24 on free throws for 70.8 percent. Oregon limited UAPB to 39 percent shooting (23-of-59), including 3-of-14 on 3-pointers (21.4 percent).
The two teams started slow, managing to score only a combined 23 points over the first 10 minutes of the game. Porter provided a spark off the bench, hitting a 3-pointer to give Oregon a 14-12 lead with 8:35 in the first half. The next time down the floor, it was Porter with a drive and dish to Dunigan, who threw down a one-handed jam to put UO up 16-12.
Dunigan scored Oregon's first six points, and 10 of the Ducks first 16.
Porter hit another long 3-pointer with 6:36 in the half, and that was followed by a run-out lay-up by Singler to cap a 7-2 run and give the Ducks a 21-14 lead.
The Golden Lions went on a 7-1 run late in the first half to cut the lead to one point at 22-21. Dunigan scored four consecutive points to close the half, finishing with a two-handed dunk assisted by Armstead, and a pair of free throws.
Over the first 20 minutes the Ducks shot just 36 percent from the floor (9-of-25), while hitting 2-of-6 on 3-pointers (33.3 percent). Oregon went 7-of-11 from the free throw line (63.6 percent), with Dunigan making 5-of-6 from the stripe. Dunigan tallied a team-high 15 points in playing 14 first-half minutes. Porter added six points (2-of-2 on 3-pointers) and three assists in 12 first-half minutes.
Oregon opened the second half on a 14-5 run, with Armstead, Porter and Dunigan leading the charge to give the Ducks a 41-31 edge with 16 minutes in the game. Porter sank his third 3-pointer of the half at the 13:28 mark to put UO up 46-35.
A 3-pointer by Singler and a pair of free throws from freshman forward Jamil Wilson put the Ducks up 15 points with eight minutes remaining.
Armstead then threw a pair of alley-oop passes for scores, the first a 45-foot pass to a streaking Singler who converted the lay-up, the second a soft dish to Dunigan who threw down with two hands. Singler then sank a pair of free throws with 6:51 on the clock to cap an 11-0 run by the Ducks.
Sophomore guard Garrett Sim put an exclamation point on the night with a thunderous one-handed dunk from the baseline at the 2:48 mark.
Oregon built its lead up to as many as 24 points on two occasions in the second half. A pair of free throws by Armstead with 2:30 left put UO up 71-47, and a dunk from sophomore forward Drew Wiley gave the Ducks a 73-49 advantage with just over a minute to play.
Oregon (8-4) will begin the Pac-10 Conference portion of its schedule Dec. 31-Jan 2 with road games against Washington State and Washington. The Ducks-Cougars contest is slated for Thursday at 3:30 p.m. (PST), while the UO-UW match-up will tip-off Saturday at 2 p.m.
