Ducks Down Davis, 13-6
02/15/09 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. ? Alex Breiner scored three of Oregon's 10 first-half goals, lifting the Ducks over UC Davis by a final count of 13-6 in women's lacrosse action Saturday on Pape' Field.
The sophomore from Alexandria, Va., recorded a natural hat-trick by tallying three straight goals over a span of two minutes and 50 seconds ? part of an eight-goal run that pushed UO out to a 9-1 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the opening half. After 30 minutes, Oregon was on top 10-2.
“We completed the first half the way we wanted to complete last week,” head coach Jen Larsen said, referencing Oregon's season-opening defeat to Stanford. “We had different people scoring, opened seams, and created more opportunities.”
Nine different players scored for the Ducks, who received two goals apiece from senior Ilsa van den Berg and freshman Catherine Davidson.
“I want to run an offense where everyone pitches in, whether it's seniors or freshmen,” Larsen said. “I was pleased with the output.”
A week after she saw her 21-game point streak come to an end, van den Berg needed only 2 minutes and six seconds to find the back of the net in the Valentine's Day matinee.
"Last week we didn't show up,” van den Berg said. “Today we did, but we still have a lot to work on. We could have come out and played better in the second half, but we still got the win."
The Ducks (1-1, 1-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) opened the second stanza with goals from van den Berg, Alicia Burkhart and Celeste Mayer for a 13-2 advantage, but the Aggies (0-1, 0-1 MPSF) scored the game's final four goals and kept Oregon off the scoreboard for the final 25 minutes of the contest.
Molly Lapolla had two goals and an assist for UC Davis, which didn't receive a single point of production off the bench.
For the second straight week, UO played in a game that featured at least 70 fouls. The Aggies committed 37 to Oregon's 33 and were whistled for eight yellow cards.
“We were tenacious after the ball and made things happen,” Larsen said.
The Ducks played the second half without junior Sarah MacDonald, who went down with an undisclosed injury less than a minute to play before halftime. MacDonald was taken to the Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend for tests and was reported to be in stable condition as of 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Oregon hits the road for the first time in 2009, traveling to No. 9 North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 20, and Stony Brook, N.Y. on Sunday.
