ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Oregon lacrosse team jumped to an early lead against Michigan, but could not keep up with the No. 5 ranked team who finished with a 16-3 final score.
The Ducks (6-6, 0-4 Big Ten) had a competitive first half with the Wolverines (9-3, 3-0 Big Ten). Oregon scored the first two goals of the game, but Michigan answered with five scores to end the first.
Despite the final score, sophomore Kate Shields had a career day making 13 saves to limit the offensive onslaught from the Wolverines. Shields and the Duck defense held Michigan to just two scores in the second quarter, marking a bright spot in the first half.
The Wolverines pulled out of reach with nine scores to the Ducks' one in the second half, handing Oregon its fourth ranked loss of the season.
How It Happened: Avery Young started the fire for the Oregon offense, netting the first goal of the game just three minutes into the first quarter. Gabby Santucci followed suit, sending the Ducks up 2-0 for what would be their only lead of the day as the wolverines answered with five straight scores.
Shields tallied a game-high six saves in the first quarter for an even .500 save percentage. She anchored the Duck defense that held Michigan to just a pair of goals in the second quarter.
The Wolverines came back from halftime with renewed energy, forcing a running clock in the third period. Nine scores by Michigan closed out the game, interrupted by the sole second-half score from Emma Ing in the third.
