Ducks Held To One Run In Loss To Huskies
03/22/09 | Baseball
PORTLAND, Ore. - For the second straight game, Oregon outhit its opponent but failed to put runs on the board, falling 5-1 to Washington in the third place game of the inaugural Rose City Invitational at PGE Park.
Oregon (9-11) got behind early surrendering four runs in the top of the first. Freshman starter Madison Boer walked Washington's Brendan Gardner-Young to lead things off, and gave up an RBI-double off the wall in right center to Julien Pollard.
Boer, who struggled to find the strike zone early on, walked Pierce Rankin, but looked to regain his control after retiring Kyle Conley and Troy Scott. A two-run double to the wall in center from Aaron Russell kept the inning alive for the Huskies, and Jake Rife then singled to right to bring Russell home for the fourth run of the inning.
After his shaky start to the first, Boer retired 12 straight batters from the last out of the first inning until Pollard's two-out single to right in the fifth. That stretch included five strikeouts from the Eden Prairie, Minn., native. Boer (1-3) finished his day taking the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits, while striking out seven total.
After holding Oregon scoreless through five innings, the Ducks began chipping away at Washington (8-11) starter Tyler Cheney.
Trailing 5-0, Curtis Raulinaitis led off the sixth with a shallow single to center field, and Danny Pulfer followed with a single through the left side. Raulinaitis moved to third on a fly out to right from Paul Eshleman, putting runners on the corners with one out. Back-to-back wild pitches moved Pulfer to second base, and then the second errant toss, thrown over the reach of Husky catcher Brady McGuire, allowed Raulinaitis to score the Ducks' first and only run .
Mitch Karraker continued the inning by reaching first with an infield hit, putting runners on the corners, but Cheney retired Josh Hogan and Andrew Schmidt to get out of the inning with no further damage inflicted.
The Ducks missed a second opportunity to put runs on the scoreboard in the seventh. Antony Kreitz lined a one-out single to right field, and Caleb Tommasini reached base by singling through the hole to left. Cheney retired Raulinaitis to center, but walked Pulfer to load the bases with two outs. That spelled the end for Cheney (2-1), who finished day with the win, having pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, giving up just one run on eight hits while striking out five.
Right-hander Aaron West came on in relief for Washington, striking out Colby Sokol on three pitches to escape the seventh.
Oregon outhit the Huskies 9-7, but the Ducks had no extra-base hits compared to two for Washington.
Karraker led the Ducks with three hits, while Raulinaitis added two.
Notes: Head coach George Horton was tossed from the game for the first time this season in the top of the sixth...Oregon has outhit opponents in its last two games, but has scored only two runs combined...in their last two games the Ducks have totaled two runs on 19 hits....Justin LaTempa made his first appearance of the season, pitching the ninth inning and retiring the side in order with one strikeout....the Ducks and Huskies have played four non-conference games this season, and UW leads the season series 1-3.
