EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team rolled to its second win over Seattle Tuesday, 9-0, and gave head coach Kathy Arendsen her 600th career win.
The seventh-year Duck mentor watched sophomore left-hander Brittany Rumfelt (1-4) post the first shutout of her career. The Lakeport, Calif., native struck out six, walked one and allowed only two hits in her five innings of work.
The Ducks (10-17) added two more homers in the afternoon finale to clear the Howe Field fence six times Tuesday in the two games combined. For the season, eight Ducks have combined on 23 home runs, compared to 17 for its opponents.
In the fifth inning, junior Neena Bryant launched her third homer of the season over the left field wall, and drove in senior Sari-Jane Jenkins who had singled before and stole second base - the school record 90th of her career. Freshman Kelsey Chambers followed with a three-run shot of her own soon after, and raised her season total to five this season after she had homered earlier in the day.
UO's first four runs came the inning before. Jenkins and Bryant opened the fourth with a double and single, and the latter scored on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt at third base. Fuiava followed with an RBI single, then scored herself on a single by Kelsey Chambers. Chambers later crossed the plate when the second baseman made an error on a grounder hit by sophomore Kaitlin Vitek with two outs.
Overall for the game, Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3, 2 runs, career high 4 RBIs) was one of three Ducks that had multiple hits with Bryant (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 1 stolen base) and Jenkins (2-for-3, 2 runs). Other Ducks that hit safely included Fuiava (1-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 walk) and juniors Carlyn Re (1-for-2, 1 run) and Blair Williamson (1-for-2).
For Seattle (8-11), starter Hannah Klein (5-4) struck out one, walked one and allowed nine hits, and eight of her nine runs allowed were earned. For SU, Peggy Mathison and Lauren Berin hit safely.
Tuesday's pair of wins raised Arendsen's overall record to 600-434 in 20 seasons. The Michigan native stands as UO's all-time wins leader among head coaches (228-159) after she previously piloted Mississippi State (1996-2002), Yale (1992-95), Eastern Illinois (1990-91) and Western Connecticut (1983).
Looking ahead, UO travels to the desert later this week to play No. 6 Arizona State in Tempe, Friday at 7 p.m., and No. 11 Arizona in Tucson, Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
