Buzzer Banker Drops Ducks
03/06/09 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - Only 4.6 seconds separated Oregon from victory on Thursday night at Mac Court, but it was enough time for UCLA's Darxia Morris to bank in a buzzer beater from just beyond half court as the Bruins walked away victorious, 70-69.
The Ducks (9-19, 5-12) erased a 13-point second-half deficit to find themselves ahead 69-67 with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Nicole Canepa hit a five-foot baseline jumper to tie the game at 67-67 with 15 seconds to go, before junior guard Taylor Lilley alertly stole the basketball from Doreena Campbell and worked her way to the basket for the go-ahead layin.
Lilley finished the game with 11 points, five rebounds and a game-high tying five assists, but the Ducks were led by sophomore guard Micaela Cocks. Oregon's leading scorer for the year chipped in 20 points - her fifth 20-plus effort of the year - shooting a flawless 9-of-9 from the free-throw line and knocking down three from long distance.
Also in double figures for the Ducks was freshman forward Amanda Johnson with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds as well as sophomore forward Ellie Manou, who chipped in 12 points and five rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
A Morris layup with 8:03 left in the game gave UCLA (18-10, 9-8) its largest lead at 58-45, but the Ducks began chipping away in the final moments.
Johnson drained one of her career-high three treys on the feed from Lilley, and cut the Bruins lead to 64-59 with 3:12 to go. Then the quick thinking of Cocks led to a steal on the defensive end, which she converted into two made free throws, getting the Ducks to within three, 64-61, with just under three minutes remaining.
A drive to the bucket from Cocks with 1:16 to go had Oregon within two, 67-65.
Campell led UCLA with 17 points on a 7-of-10 night from the stripe, while Morris added 13 and Atonye Nyingifa contributed 10 with a team-leading seven rebounds.
Oregon led by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Bruins ended the first period on a 16-3 run over the final 4:43 to take a 37-34 lead at the break.
That run continued, spanning nearly 10 minutes combined between the finish of the first half and the start of the second as UCLA outscored Oregon 26-6 and took a 47-37 lead with 14:39 remaining.
Cocks led all scorers in the first half scoring 13 points by knocking down two three-pointers and shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Notes: Oregon was without freshman guard Darriel Gaynor due to illness, she will be reevaluated fore Saturday's game...senior Rita Kollo missed her 28th game of the season, she is not expected to play Saturday, but will be honored prior to tipoff...the Ducks' 19 losses this season set a new program record...Oregon's nine home losses also set a new program record...the Ducks split their series with UCLA for the third year in a row.
