Oregon Takes Series With Two Victories On Sunday
03/09/09 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon played through snow and sunshine on Sunday at PK Park, taking two victories on the final day of its series with Santa Clara.
With Sunday's victories - a 3-2, 13-inning marathon and a 5-1, five-inning game to close the series - Oregon improves to 6-6 on the year and takes the series with Broncos 3-1.
Santa Clara drops to 3-7 on the season.
Oregon resumed its third game of the series in the top of eighth to start the day off, after the contest was halted due to darkness on Saturday. The Ducks and Broncos played another six innings of baseball, knotted at 2-2, before Oregon freshman KC Serna hit a walk-off single to end things in the bottom of the 13th.
The game was Oregon's first extra-inning outing of the year.
Senior Caleb Tommasini led off the 13th with a single to left, and junior Curtis Raulinaitis was walked, allowing Eddy Rodriguez to move both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Mitch Karraker was intentionally walked by Santa Clara right-hander Steve Kalush, setting the table with the bases load and one out for Serna's game-winning single to left field.
Tommasini picked up four of Oregon's eight total hits in the game with a 4-for-5 performance along with two stolen bases.
Geoff Nichols (1-0) pitched the final inning and 1/3 to pick up the win in relief of Drew Gagnier (four and 2/3 innings) and Ryan Fleckenstein. Nichols, a native of Portland, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 12th by retiring Kevin Madden.
Kalush (0-1) took the loss for the Broncos, allowing just one run on four hits in six innings of relief for starter Alex Rivers.
Each team stranded 10 base runners in the game, and the Ducks hit into double plays in both the 8th and 10th innings with runners in scoring position.
The Ducks and Broncos played a regulation five-inning game in the second outing of the day due to travel constraints, and Oregon won its third straight, 5-1, to take the series.
The Ducks did the majority of their damage in the first, scoring three runs. Again it was Tommasini leading things off by reaching first on a walk. Raulinaitis' single up the middle moved Tommasini to third, putting runners on the corners for Rodriguez. The Warden Wash., native dropped a bunt down the third baseline that Santa Clara pitcher Cory Hall fielded, but catcher Geoff Klein was unable to hold on to the throw, allowing Tommasini to score from third.
A double steal for Raulinaitis and Rodriguez set up Serna to score Raulinaitis on a sacrifice fly, and the Ducks earned their third run of the inning when an error from shortstop Jon Karcich allowed Rodriguez to cross the plate.
In the second, Raulinaitis plated Danny Pulfer to add the Ducks fourth run, and in the fifth, John Adamson doubled to right field to score Andrew Schmidt.
The Ducks totaled seven hits in five innings of play.
Oregon freshman right-hander Madison Boer was credited with a complete game, picking up his first win of the year. Boer threw all five innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits.
Hall (0-2) took the loss for the Broncos, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits in one and 2/3 innings.
Oregon travels to the University of Nevada (3-8) for a four-game series next week in Reno.
