Another Late UC Irvine Rally Defeats Ducks
04/22/09 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. - Another late rally from UC Irvine spelled the end of hope for an Oregon upset over the top-ranked Anteaters as UCI scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 7-4 victory over the Ducks on Tuesday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.
In the bottom of the eighth, Oregon (13-25) reliever Bennett Whitmore struck Casey Stevenson to put the leadoff batter on, and Stevenson moved into scoring position on Jeff Cusick's sacrifice. Drew Gagnier came on in relief of Whitmore and walked the first batter he saw in Tommy Reyes, before surrendering the go-ahead run to DJ Crumlich as his RBI single to center scored Stevenson. A few defensive miscues led to the Anteaters last two runs as an infield chopper fielded by Ducks second baseman Josh Hogan was dropped by Gagnier covering first, allowing Reyes to score. Crumlich scored the game's final run when Darrell Hunter's throw from first to home on Ben Orloff's groundout was offline, bringing Crumlich around from third.
With the game tied at 4-4, Oregon stranded its own go-ahead run just from 90 feet away in the top of the eighth. Jett Hart led off the inning by returning Noel Avison's delivery back up the middle into center field, and Caleb Tommasini moved his outfield partner to second with a sacrifice that hugged the first baseline. Avison struck out Curtis Raulinaitis for the second out of the inning, but Hart still managed to steal third. Danny Pulfer came to the plate and had a 3-1 count in his favor when UCI decided to intentionally deliver ball four. Paul Eshleman then pinch hit for Karraker and fouled out to Reyes, ending the inning with two left on base.
Oregon outhit No. 1 UC Irvine 8-7 on the day, but issued seven free bases by walking five batters and hitting Stevenson twice.
Whitmore (1-6) took the loss for Oregon pitching 1 and 2/3 innings in relief of starter Madison Boer. Stevenson, Whitmore's hit batter in the eight proved to the go-ahead run and the only score the left-hander gave up during his time on the mound. Boer pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while walking three.
Avison (3-1) earned the win for the Anteaters, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings in relief of UCI starter Crosby Slaught. Avison held the Ducks scoreless and surrendered just two hits and one walk during his time on the mound. Oregon got to Slaught, scoring four runs, all earned, on six hits.
Eric Deragisch was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for UC Irvine, while Crumlich ended his day 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Karraker was 2-for-3 for the Ducks with three RBIs , while Raulinaitis continued his hot streak with a 2-for-4 effort.
Slaught's day was done in the top of the sixth after he surrendered back-to-back singles to Tommasini and Raulinaitis. A sacrifice bunt from Pulfer moved the runners into scoring position with one out as Slaught was lifted in favor of Avison. Karraker came to the plate and the lefty-on-lefty match up resulted with Oregon's starting catcher knocking a two-run single to right with two strikes against him to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fourth UC Irvine added a run and took a 4-2 advantage after letting the leadoff batter on came back to haunt Oregon. Boer hit Stevenson to put him on base and then surrendered a single to Cusick to put two runners on. A sacrifice from Reyes moved the runners to second and third, allowing for Crumlich's RBI sacrifice fly to right. Fisher sent a long shot to right that looked as if it was going to do more damage, but Hart got a good jump on the ball and made the catch up against the wall in right to end the inning as the Anteaters exited the fourth ahead 4-2.
The Ducks began to get a handle on Slaught in the fourth as Oregon pieced together three consecutive singles. Raulinaitis led off the inning with a shallow single to center, and moved to third when Danny Pulfer dropped a single into center field. Karraker then returned the first pitch he saw to left center for an RBI single to bring Raulinaitis home and move Pulfer to third. KC Serna then hit into a double play, but Pulfer was still able to score on the play to cut the Anteaters' lead to 3-2.
Boer retired the sides in order in the first and second innings, but pitched his way into trouble in the third. The right-hander issued three walks to load the bases in the inning with only one out, setting the table for Deragisch. The starting left fielder laced a bases-clearing triple in the left center gap between Raulinaitis and Tommasini to give UC Irvine a 3-0 lead.
