04/27/09 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. ? Senior Cathryn Bristow and sophomore Kendra Little shot 1-under scores of 70 Sunday to help the No. 36 University of Oregon women's golf team climb two more positions into seventh place in the final round of the 23rd annual Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championships Sponsored by Duramed.
The returning All-Pac-10 Second Team picks placed 10th (75-72-70-217) and 12th overall (76-73-70-219), while freshman Ashley Edwards also placed top 25 overall (24th-t, 79-72-74-225).
UO's other entrants in the three-round event at the Stanford Golf Course included sophomores Monika Graf (43rd, 82-78-80-240) and Erica Omlid (49th, 82-81-83-246).
Bristow's placing was UO's highest since Jerilyn White took ninth in 2001, while the Ducks' finish matched their best placing since 2000 (they also took seventh in '08).
Entering the final day, Bristow and Little stood 12th and 19th, and Edwards also improved on her second-round standing (26th) from Saturday. For comparison's sake, the trio stood tied for 21st, 27th and 37th, respectively, after Friday's first round.
Bristow claimed three birdies Sunday on the par-5 first and 12th holes and another on the par-3 eighth, turned in par scores on 13 holes, and bogeyed only twice (on the fourth and sixth holes). Overall for the tourney, she had seven birdies ? all on different holes (1st, 8th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th).
Little logged five birdies from the ninth hole on Sunday, posted par scores on 10 holes, bogeyed twice and suffered one double bogey. For the tourney, she had the most birdies on the team (11), including one each day on the par-5 12th hole, and a pair on the par-5 first hole in the first and second rounds.
Edwards added three birdies Sunday on the second, seventh and eighth holes, shot par on 10 holes, had four bogeys and one double-bogey.
Bristow's best round for UO ? her third straight of the tourney and third in her last six rounds - was her ninth in 24 rounds for the Ducks this season and 43rd overall in 111 collegiate career rounds. Sunday's score also marked her third of the season of par or better and 18th career-wise.
Likewise for Little, she has paced UO in 13 of her 27 rounds this season (including six of her last nine), and 26 times altogether in her career.
Bristow has played in the league finale three other times (38th in '08, 27th in '07, 40th in '06), while Little placed 20th in last year's UCLA-hosted event. UO's other three entries ? Edwards, Graf, Omlid ? wrapped up their event debuts.
Overall in the team standings, No. 1 Arizona State added four strokes to its lead Sunday to win by nine strokes (6-under 852, 293-281-278) over No. 4 USC (second, 292-291-278-861), which moved ahead of No. 2 UCLA Sunday (291-288-285-864).
No. 21 Arizona held onto fourth place (298-296-290-884), while No. 26 California (fifth, 298-305-284-887) and passed No. 24 Stanford (sixth, 302-294-294-890) the final round. No. 36 Oregon climbed two spots into seventh place (312-295-294-901) to finish comfortably ahead of No. 71 Washington State (eighth, 306-297-308-911), No. 40 Washington (ninth, 305-301-307-913) and No. 64 Oregon State (309-314-297-920).
On the individual front, after four players entered the final round tied for the lead, the trio of Carlota Ciganda and Jennifer Osborn of Arizona State and Jennifer Song of USC were all still tied after regulation after final round 69's that yielded 2-under overall scores of 210. Ciganda (70-71-69-210) was ultimately crowned the champion after the one-hole playoff over Osborn (72-69-69-210) and Song (70-71-69-210).
USC's Lizette Salas followed in a tie for fourth place thanks to the tourney's best score in the finale (74-72-65-211), and two players tied for fifth place at 212.
