04/29/09 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - John Wallace's first home run of the season was good for four as the Oregon State starting center fielder crushed a grand slam and led No. 22 OSU to a 10-2 victory over Oregon on Tuesday evening at Goss Stadium.
Wallace's grand slam was part of a six-run inning for Oregon State (25-11), as the Beavers turned a 2-2 tie into a 8-2 advantage in the bottom of the fifth.
While it was Wallace's first home run of the season, it was the first surrendered by Oregon starter Madison Boer in 2009. The freshman right-hander took the loss (1-5) after allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits and one walk.
In the bottom of the fifth, OSU loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and an Oregon (13-29) fielding error, setting the table for Wallace's grand slam.
After four-run homer, Boer then walked Ryan Ortiz before Zack Thornton came on in relief. Ortiz scored the fifth run of the inning on Jared Norris' double to the gap in left center, while Adalberto Santos' single down the left field line plated Norris for the sixth and final run of the fifth as OSU took an 8-2 lead.
Oregon starter Sam Gaviglio improved to 6-1 on the season, pitching five innings and holding Oregon to two runs on three hits while striking out six.
Gaviglio faced the minimum through the first three innings, but the second time through the Ducks lineup, Oregon began to get runners on base and tied the score, 2-2, in the top of the fourth.
Curtis Raulinaitis started the rally with a one-out double to left, and later scored on KC Serna's RBI single, cutting OSU's lead, 2-1. Serna moved into scoring position on Paul Eshleman's ground out, and tied the game when Danny Pulfer sent Gaviglio's offering back up the middle for his 14th RBI of the season.
Oregon State took a one-run lead in the top of the first benefiting from Wallace's leadoff double to left center. Wallace came around to score the game's first run on Ortiz's RBI single. The Beavers loaded the bases in the second with no outs, but Koa Kahalehoe hit into a double play as Norris was the only one to cross the plate giving OSU a 2-0 advantage.
Wallace led OSU batting 2-for-5 with 5 RBIs and two runs scored. Ortiz was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Santos was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
OSU added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In addition to Thornton, Ryan Fleckenstein, Scott McGough and Drew Gagnier all appeared in relief.
Raulinaitis led the Ducks with a 2-for-4 performance including his eighth double of the year. The junior left fielder has now hit safely in seven of Oregon's last eight games. He also leads the team with 15 multiple-hit games, recording multiple hits in six of his last eight starts.
Pulfer, now on a team-leading six-game hitting streak, was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
