Pries Holds Oregon To One Run In Stanford Win
04/04/09 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. - Stanford starter Jordan Pries held Oregon to just one run in his 7 and 2/3 innings on the mound, remaining undefeated as a freshman and leading the Cardinal to a 3-1 win on Saturday at PK Park.
With the Pac-10 series even at 1-1, Sunday's 1 p.m. start will serve as the series rubber game. Tickets are still available for tomorrow at the North ticket office, which opens 90 minutes prior to game time.
Trailing by three runs and held scoreless for over seven innings, the Ducks (12-16, 2-3) put their rally caps on in the eighth. Mitch Karraker's one-out single to left center eventually turned into Oregon's first run. A pinch-hit single from freshman Paul Eshleman moved Karraker into scoring position, setting up Danny Pulfer's RBI single to left field.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Pries was relieved in favor of Drew Storen, who retired Curtis Raulinaitis to first base, stranding Oregon's potential go-ahead runs.
Pries (3-0) finished his day surrendering just one run on five hits while striking out seven.
Oregon junior righthander Erik Stavert (2-3) took the loss for the Ducks, his first since a 6-3 loss at Saint Mary's on Feb. 21. Stavert lasted 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while dealing five strikeouts.
Stanford (10-14, 2-2) scored the first runs of the day in the top of the third. Jake Schlander was walked by Stavert to lead off the inning, and moved around the bases on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. The Cardinal starting shortstop then scored the game's first run on a wild pitch on a high throw from Stavert.
After Schlander scored for Stanford, senior Joey August approached the plate and hammered a solo home run over the shallow wall in right field, about eight feet past the outstretched glove of Oregon outfielder Jett Hart.
Hart appeared to nab a home run of his own in the sixth, but his shot fell about two feet short as Toby Gerhart made a grab up against the wall in left field for the out.
The Ducks left two runners stranded in the fourth after Caleb Tommasini lined a two-out double off the wall in center field. Eddy Rodriguez was then walked to put runners at first and second, but Pries struck out Andrew Schmidt to end the inning.
Stanford added its final run in the eighth when Adam Gaylord led off the inning with a single up the middle. He moved to second on a sacrifice, to third on a ground out and scored on a throwing error.
Storen earned his second save of the season pitching the final inning and 1/3.
Oregon will return to PK Park Sunday for the series finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., and the game is set to be broadcast by the Oregon Sports Network on Comcast SportsNet Northwest (channel 37). Joe Giansante and Rob Closs will be making the call.
Notes: Caleb Tommasini's double was his first of the season...Danny Pulfer has recorded an RBI in the last three games.
