Oregon Held To Three Hits In Loss To Cougs
05/10/09 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. ? Washington State starter Chad Arnold
limited Oregon's offense to three hits on the day while dealing a
career-high tying seven strikeouts as the Cougars defeated the Ducks
5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the win, WSU improves to 24-20 on the year and 13-7 in the Pac-10, while also assuring itself of the series victory over the Ducks after Saturday's 5-3 win.
Oregon falls to 14-33 on the season and 4-16 in the Pac-10, still waiting for its first Pac-10 series victory. Monday's noon start will serve as the series finale.
Oregon freshman left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-7) took the loss, surrendering five runs on 10 hits in seven and 2/3 innings of work.
Arnold (6-2) held the Ducks to two runs on three hits during his seven innings of work, while Jeremy Johnson picked up his eighth save of the year pitching the final two innings and holding the Ducks hitless.
The difference in the game was a three-run second inning for Washington State. Jared Prince led off the inning with a double off wall in left center, and scored on Michael Weber's bunt single toward third. Oregon's infield was again tested when Matt Fanelli's bunt single toward first put two runners on. Matt Agyropoulos then dropped a one-run double into right as Weber crossed the plate, and Fanelli then scored WSU's third run, coming home on Jay Ponciano's sacrifice bunt.
The Ducks answered in the fourth after Curtis Raulinaitis hammered a one-out double to right center, and moved to third on a wild pitch. KC Serna then picked up his 18th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the fifth, Antony Kreitz sliced a one-out triple all the way to the wall past the diving glove of Prince. With Kreitz just 90 feet away, Caleb Tommasini returned an RBI single back up the middle to cut the Cougars lead to 3-2. Tommasini lingering at first base bothered Arnold, as the righty issued a four-pitch walk to Josh Hogan, putting runners on first and second. But Arnold limited the damage, striking out Jett Hart and Danny Pulfer as the Ducks stranded two runners.
Washington State increased its lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Ponciano sent his second home run of the season on a 2-1 count over the wall in left.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Fanelli's RBI single to right.
The series finale is set for a noon start, Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The broadcast will be available on KUGN 590 in Eugene and on the O-Zone at www.GoDucks.com.
