Bauer Tosses Complete Game In Win Over Ducks
05/02/09 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. ? Another outstanding pitching performance decided the second game of the Oregon-UCLA series this weekend, but this time the gem belonged to a Bruin, freshman Trevor Bauer.
The right-hander tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing just two runs on six hits in UCLA's 6-2 victory. Bauer (7-3) struck out four over his nine innings, as Oregon tallied only six hits and stranded six base runners.
With the series now even at one game apiece, the Ducks (14-30, 4-13) and Bruins (21-22, 12-8) will play tomorrow's rubber game at 1 p.m. inside PK Park. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the PK Park ticket office 90 minutes before game time.
Oregon freshman left-hander Tyler Anderson (2-6) took the loss for the Ducks, allowing five runs on six hits in 4 and 2/3 innings of work, while striking out six.
UCLA did most of its damage with a three-run fifth inning, leading things off with back-to-back hits.
Tyler Rahmatulla started the fifth with a deep single to second, and Eddie Murray doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with no outs for Chris Giovinazzo. UCLA's starting right fielder put an infield chopper in play, and Oregon first baseman Darrell Hunter fielded the ball, making a throw to the plate, but Rahmatulla slid under Mitch Karraker's tag as the Bruins took a 4-1 lead.
Later in inning, Blair Dunlap's RBI fielder's choice scored Murray, and Giovinazzo took home on a double steal attempt before Dunlap was thrown out at second for UCLA's 6-1 advantage.
Dunlap led UCLA at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs. Gino Aielli was 2-for-4 with a RBI, and Rahmatulla finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
KC Serna led the Ducks with 2-for-2 performance and one walk.
The Ducks cut UCLA's early 2-0 lead in half during the bottom of the fourth when Bauer issued Curtis Raulinaitis a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on Serna's well-placed sacrifice bunt. Freshman Danny Pulfer then came through with the two-out RBI single to right.
The Ducks also added a run in the bottom of the sixth to come within 5-2. Caleb Tommasini led off the inning with an infield single, and advanced to second on Raulinaitis' ground out. Serna's single to left put runners on the corners for Paul Eshleman, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Tommasini.
Freshmen right-handers Chris Garrison and Scott McGough each appeared in relief. Garrison tossed a scoreless 1 and 1/3 inning, while McGough pitched the final three, allowing one unearned run on one hit.
Oregon and UCLA will play the third game of their Pac-10 series at 1 p.m., Sunday from PK Park.
The game is also scheduled to be broadcast by the Oregon Sports Network on Comcast SportsNet Northwest (channel 37) with Joe Giansante and Rob Closs calling the game. The series finale will also be televised on KLSR (channel 5) in Eugene.
