2009 Comes To A Close With Loss To Arizona
05/25/09 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. ? Arizona completed the series sweep of Oregon with a 5-2 victory at PK Park on Sunday as the Ducks first season in 28 years came to a close.
For the fourth consecutive game, Oregon (14-42, 4-23) took the first lead, but couldn't hold on down the stretch.
The Ducks were ahead 1-0 after the first inning, when Kenny Bartz extended his hitting streak to five games by leading off the inning with a single back up the middle. Danny Pulfer worked a walk, and Curtis Raulinaitis moved both runners over to second and third with a sacrifice. Antony Kreitz's fielder's choice RBI then scored Bartz from third.
Arizona evened the score in the top of the third after Dwight Childs reached to lead off the inning after being hit by a pitch. He scored from second later in the inning on Dillon Baird's RBI single, a blooper to center field.
The Wildcats eventually broke the game's 1-1 tie in the sixth when Childs lifted a two-run single over the head of Raulinaitis in left field, scoring Bobby Coyle and Steve Selsky.
Baird added insurance runs for Arizona (30-25, 13-14) with back-to-back home runs in at-bats in the seventh and ninth innings.
The Ducks had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth after Arizona closer Jason Stoffel issued back-to-back two-out walks to Bartz and Pulfer. With two on and two outs, Stoffel coaxed a fly out from Raulinaitis.
Oregon threatened again in the ninth after Kreitz led off the bottom of the inning with a double to center field, his eighth of the season. Caleb Tommasini's RBI fielder's choice scored Kreitz, but with two outs, Andrew Schmidt popped up to second ending the game.
Baird finished his day 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored, two home runs and one double. The Ducks were led by Rauliniatis' 2-for-3 performance.
Daniel Workman (3-1) pitched 5 and 1/3 innings in the win for Arizona, holding the Ducks to one run on three hits while striking out three. Stoffel earned his 11th save of the season, pitching the final two innings and allowing one run on one hit.
Alex Keudell (0-6) took the loss for the Ducks after allowing three runs on five hits in 2 and 1/3 innings of relief for starter Drew Gagnier.
Gagnier, normally a closer, lasted 4 and 2/3 innings in his first and only start of the season, allowing one run on two hits and five walks while dealing four strikeouts.
Zack Thornton pitched the game's final two innings for Oregon, allowing one run on one hit.
