Oregon Runs Wild On Wolves
11/13/10 | Women's Basketball
The Oregon women's basketball team christened the year with its ninth consecutive season-opening victory, defeating visiting Western Oregon, 110-70, at McArthur Court on Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks (1-0) had six players in double figures led by Amanda Johnson's 13th double-double of her career, scoring 18 points and adding a game-high 11 rebounds.
Junior point guard Nia Jackson produced an all-round game with 12 points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds and four steals, while junior Jasmin Holliday scored 12 points, picked up seven rebounds and added five steals.
Freshman Deanna Weaver scored 16 points in her official debut on a 7-of-12 shooting performance, while freshman point guard Ariel Thomas added 15 points off the bench while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior college transfer Ashley Buis added 14.
It was the first time since Oregon's victory over Arizona on Feb. 11, 2010, which UO had six players reach double figures. UO's 40-point win was also its largest margin of victory since a 48-point win over Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 27, 2009.
Oregon's 110 points marked the first time the Ducks reached triple digits since a loss at Arizona on Jan. 16, 2010.
The Ducks shot 46.4 percent (45-of-97) from the floor and outrebounded the Wolves 65-33. The Ducks' 34 offensive rebounds also set a new program record (since 1986-87 season).
Western Oregon (0-1) was led by Jamie Richardson's game-high 20 points, while Rylee Peterson added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Western Oregon struggled to adapt to the frantic pace of Oregon's full-court pressure as the Wolves shot just 30.6 percent (19-62) from the floor and committed 34 turnovers, while UO accumulated 19 steals.
Jackson and Thomas led the Ducks at halftime with 10 points apiece as UO took a commanding 60-29 lead into the locker room.
Oregon shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor in the first half, and forced the Wolves into 19 first-half turnovers as WOU shot a cold 25 percent (7-28) from the floor.
Western Oregon had the game tied, 7-7, after Hannah Whistett completed a four-point play, knocking down a 3-pointer and the free throw after she was fouled.
But the Ducks executed a 15-0 run and took a 22-7 lead with 14:03 remaining in the first half as the Ducks forced seven WOU turnovers during that stretch.
UO's lead climbed to 21 points, 37-16, after Victoria Kenyon knocked down a jumper with 7:59 to play.
Oregon travels to Long Beach State next week on Friday for a 7 p.m. tip with the 49ers. LBSU leads the all-time series 5-4.
The Ducks return to Mac Court to host the Oregon Invitational, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 26-28. UO will welcome Cal State Bakersfield, Idaho and Sacramento State to the tournament.
Fans are asked to help ease hunger in Lane County by donating non-perishable food items to Food for Lane County. Donate three items at the McArthur Court entrance to receive $3 off the general admission ticket price each day of the tournament.
