*WASHINGTON QUOTES
Head Coach Steve Sarkisian
Opening Remarks
“I thought our guys battled, they competed against an excellent football team. I thought we had some real crucial missed opportunities early in the ball game to convert on third down, the touchdown that gets called back for covering up the receiver. I thought our defense played a really nice first half of football. Unfortunately we didn't help ourselves on special teams and when we made the game when we put a little bit of stress or pressure on them or get the turnover and score again there in the third quarter that kickoff return really took a lot of wind out of our sails. That really spun the game back to their favor and got their mojo going and when they got rolling, they were hard to stop.”
On going for the fourth down
“I wanted to keep some momentum on our side. I thought by kicking the field goal, it was a feel-good drive for us. I like going for it, but at that moment I felt like getting three points was big for us.”
On “earning the respect of the opponent”
“I think we played hard. I understand why they are the number one team in the country. They played like it. Everyone wants to continually talk about their offense; it's not just their offense. They are an exceptional special teams team. We knew that coming in and they are very good on defense. That team led the country in creating turnovers more than any other team in the country and I thought we took care of the ball tonight.”
On Quarterback Keith Price
“I thought he battled and competed. There's always going to be plays where I wish our guys could have bailed him out a little and helped him out. There were a couple drops here and there. There's going to be plays when he sees the film, he wishes he could have back. But for his first start, on the road, at Autzen Stadium, against the number one team in the country, I'll take his effort.”
On building confidence for the last games
“I thought what Oregon is excellent at is they will continually wear you down as the game goes on unless you can keep it tight and we were unable to do that. I thought we were much more competitive today than we were the last two weekends or the last six quarters leading up to this ball game. There are some good things to take from that. I thought our defense played with huge hearts. We'll regroup this week and we're heading into the fourth quarter of the season. We've preached a mantra around here since I've gotten here about “Finish.” That's what we will do the final three ball games.”
On Kickoffs
“I thought especially today a couple of those kickoffs bounced to the field. Good returners feel that and understand that. That's the first part of it and the second part of it is we tried a bunch of different kicks but they're going to take advantage of that and they're good at it.”
On being worn down in the second half
“We were exhausted. We didn't help offensively. We couldn't sustain drives on offense to give our defense a rest. The game got in their [Oregon's] control, just the way they like it. They can go fast and wear you out.”
On the mood at halftime
“I think there was a little bit of disappointment that we didn't have the touchdown, but we got the field goal. There was some confidence and some belief there. It was very similar to last year's game in the first half. Again, we had opportunities to have more points that we didn't take advantage of. When you have your chances, you have to capitalize.”
Alameda Ta'amu #74 DT
On hanging with Oregon:
“The Ducks always comes out. Darron kept the ball, and formed some open lanes.”
On mindset at halftime:
“We were still in the game to do this. We came out in the first couple plays with a bang, but I guess the outcome was different.”
“I think they were fast paced and it was too much for us. Too many people got too excited. We kind of ran out of gas.”
On finishing the season:
“The last 3 games we need to stay focused and keep pushing ourselves.”
“Today we stuck together, the sidelines were crazy, and we pushed each other. We just need to stay together and be a unit.”
On atmosphere of Autzen:
“It was not as bad as my freshman year. We have practiced with loud speakers this week so we paid no attention to the crowd. We need to keep holding on to each other. We are a team today and a team for the rest of the year.”
Keith Price #17 QB
On touchdown:
“I knew we had a chance. Coach called the right play. We just kept playing and fighting. We really had nothing to lose. They had more pressure than we did.”
On always smiling:
“I just love the game and I am having fun. I just had a great time and I am looking forward to the future. I am preparing as if I am going to play.”
