TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Oregon softball team (3-2) enjoyed its first shutout of the season and again tapped the home-run bat of freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas en route to a 4-0 win over Western Michigan (1-4) Sunday afternoon to open the final day of the Kajikawa Classic.
In her first start of the season, the Lakeport, Calif., native Rumfelt pitched 6.1 of the 7-inning contest and struck out a nine batters – one off her career high - and walked none and allowed only three hits.
Oregon's other pitcher of the game, sophomore Samantha Skillingstad, came in and pitched the other two outs and had a strikeout and no walks.
At the plate for UO, Pappas led off her second straight contest with a home run, this one a blast to center field that landed 30 feet past the fence. The round-tripper was her team-leading third in as many days and marked UO's seventh of the season.
The Ducks added another run in the third inning on a double by senior centerfielder Neena Bryant that scored freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard who had singled the at-bat before.
Oregon added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning on a double by Rumfelt, and she scored in the next at-bat on a single by freshman left fielder Allie Burger after the centerfield misfielded the ball, and Burger advanced to third base on a wild throw home by the centerfielder.
At the plate, Rumfelt also turned in a career-high two hits with her second-inningsingle. Four other Ducks hit safely – Pappas (1-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Howard (1-for-2, 1 run), Bryant (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (1-for-3)
For Western Michigan, starting pitcher Diana Patterson, struck out three, walked one, and three of her four runs were earned. At the plate for the Broncos, two batters hit safely – catcher Sarah Thomas (1-for-3) and first baseman Meredith Whitney (2-for-3).
The Broncos' best chance to score came in the second inning when with one out, two runners reach based on errors by the shortstop, but Rumfelt forced a fly-out and groundout to end the inning. Whitney also ended the sixth inning stranded on second base after her two-out double, as a strikeout by the fifth hitter, Michelle Bendenwald, ended the inning.
Looking ahead to its last game of the tournament, UO faces Cal State Northridge (1-4) immediately after on the same field at the Tempe Sports Complex.
