Ducks Fall 4-3 to Minnesota
02/20/10 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 73 Oregon women's tennis team lost an incredibly intense match, 4-3, to No. 52 Minnesota. In a battle of closely ranked teams, it came down to the final singles match to decide the winner.
After taking the doubles point with 8-4 wins at both No. 1 and No. 3, the Ducks needed three singles wins to seal the victory. But the Gophers would not concede defeat.
Minnesota won the first two singles matches, taking straight set victories at No. 6 and No. 2. But the Ducks won a pair of their own matches to take a 3-2 lead in the dual match. Trudie du Toit, after losing 6-0 in the first set and down 2-0 in the second, won 12 of the last 15 points to take her No. 3 singles match 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. Emmanuelle Cor also won at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
But Minnesota won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to stop the run. Patricia Skowronski could still win the day for the Ducks, and after being down 0-5 but winning the first set 7-6 (4) she looked to be in good shape. But she fell in the second and third set to lose 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 in an fierce back-and-forth match.
Oregon will have to recover quickly, as the Ducks play #38 Alabama at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in the Student Tennis Center behind McArthur Court.
