Ducks Drop 7-0 Decision to No. 5 USC

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 5 ranked USC Trojans knocked off the No. 67 ranked Oregon men's tennis team 7-0 on Friday afternoon inside the Student Tennis Center. After the Ducks' first Pac-10 match of the 2010 season, they fall to 11-5, 0-1 Pac-10 after the loss. USC improves to 15-2, 3-0.
Marcos Verdasco and Alexander Cornelissen highlighted doubles play for the Ducks, with an 8-5 victory at No. 1. The No. 77 ranked Duck tandem knocked off No. 48 rated Jason McNaughton and Daniel Nguyen. It was the second time this season the pair defeated a nationally ranked team, but the first time they knocked off a higher rated team.
In singles play, Verdasco came out hot at No. 2, taking the first set 6-4 but slipped up and USC's Jaak Poldma stole the match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. Jose' Izquierdo also went three sets, losing the first set 7-6 but winning the second set 6-2. Unfortunately, he too would drop a tight third set tiebreak, 11-9.
The Trojans came into the match featuring six players ranked in the top-120 nationally, including the No. 1 overall player in the nation, Steve Johnson. Johnson defeated Cornelissen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The Ducks battle UCLA tomorrow for SENIOR DAY as the No. 12 ranked Bruins will be Oregon's final home opponent of the season. Match time is set for 1 p.m. With the forecast calling for warm temperatures and no rain, the match is tenatively scheduled to be played outdoors at the 18th Street Tennis Courts. If not, it will be inside the Student Tennis Center behind Mac Court.
