LOS ANGELES - Extending its reputation as one of the nation's hottest teams, the No. 5 UCLA softball team (36-9, 10-5) staked its ninth game in a row with Sunday's 10-2 win over No. 18 Oregon (31-13, 7-8) at Easton Stadium.
Oregon scored single runs in the first and third innings, while UCLA put a pair of runs on the board in the first and third innings, then added another run in the fourth, four in the fifth, and another in the sixth.
Four Ducks hit safely - freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas (1-for-2, 1 RBI, walk), junior catcher Ashley Kivett (1-for-3, 1 RBI), junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (1-for-3) and senior designated player Blair Williamson (1-for-2).
UO opened the game with a run in its first at-bat when Pappas walked, stole second base, then scored on single to left field by Kivett who collected an RBI for the third straight game.
Williamson opened the third with a bunt single, then advanced to second base on a throwing error by the catcher. Pappas followed with a double to score Williamson for her team-leading 44th RBI of the season and moved into a tie for eighth all-time in a season for UO.
The double for Pappas also marked her ninth of the season – only three shy of Oregon's 10th-best total in a campaign.
Freshman Jessica Moore (13-8) made UO's longest start of the weekend, and pitched 4.2 innings, struck out four, walked two, allowed 11 hits, and three of her nine runs allowed were earned.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Samantha Skillingstad came in and got an out via a strikeout, and sophomore Mikayla Endicott pitched the final 0.2 innings, struck out one, gave up a hit and an earned run, and walked none.
UCLA starter Donna Kerr (17-5) pitched the first four innings, struck out one, walked one, scattered four hits, and two of her four runs allowed were earned. Megan Langenfeld worked the last two innings, struck out four, walked one, and gave up no runs or hits.
At the plate for the Bruins, eight batters hit safely, and four had multiple hits – Jenn Shull (3-for-4, 1 RBI), Andrea Harrison (2-for-3, 4 RBI), Langefeld (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and GiOnna DiSalvatore (2-for-4, 3 RBI).
Coming into the series, UO pitchers had only given up a previous season-high two home runs in three prior games, but the Bruins hit four roundtrippers for the second straight day Sunday courtesy of two by Harrison, and single shots by DiSalvatore and Shull. The Ducks entered the weekend tied with the Bruins for the conference lead in fewest home runs allowed (15), after ranking sixth in the league last year (44).
With her 11 strikeouts in 7.2 innings over the weekend, Moore now stands third all-time for UO for strikeouts in a season (187) and is only 16 behind the school record of head coach Mike White's former pupil Amy Harris (203, 2005).
For the three-game series, Kivett led the team in hitting (.625, 5-for-8, 1 home run, 3 RBI), and senior center fielder Neena Bryant also topped .300 (.375, 3-for-8, double, home run, 1 RBI, walk).
UO was swept for the first time in conference action this year after it swept then-No. 13 Cal (3-0) for the first time ever, and topped Oregon State (2-1), while Oregon went 1-2 vs. No. 1 Washington and then-No. 9 Arizona State. On Sunday, the Bruins claimed their second straight 10-2 victory vs. UO by the regulation-shortened, eight-run rule – the first two times Oregon has fallen victim this season.
Looking ahead, UO hosts Portland State for a doubleheader at Howe Field, Wednesday, May 5 at 4 p.m. Eight-time national champion and No. 3 Arizona then travels to Eugene for single games Friday (5/7) at 6 p.m., Saturday (5/8) at 1 p.m. and Sunday (5/9) at noon.
