WASHINGTON STATE RECAP
Oregon used a little Mac Court magic on Thursday night, recovering from a double-figure deficit as junior point guard Nia Jackson took over the game down the stretch and steered the Ducks to a 77-72 victory over Washington State.
Jackson was responsible for Oregon's (10-4, 1-2) last 10 points of the game as the Seattle native helped the Ducks maintain their lead for good after converting a lay-up that gave UO a 69-67 lead with 2:55 left.
Jackson finished the game just one point shy of her season high, pouring in 22 points and matching her career high with eight rebounds while adding four assists and five steals.
With the game knotted at 70-70, Oregon junior guard Ashley Buis struggled to maintain possession for UO, but alertly kicked the ball out to an awaiting Jackson nearly six feet behind the 3-point line. With the shot clock running down to zero, Jackson drained a long distance trey that buried the Cougars (2-13, 0-3).
Washington State missed back-to-back 3-pointers on its next possession, but guard April Cook was able to get the offensive rebound and putback. Jackson was then steady at the line, knocking down all four of her attempts over the final eight seconds of the game.
Washington State's Jazmine Perkins led all scorers with 24 points, knocking down six 3-pointers, the most an individual player has recorded against the Ducks this season.
The Cougars totaled 10 three-pointers for the game, matching an Oregon opponent season high.
For the third consecutive game, Oregon senior forward Nicole Canepa reached double figures, scoring a season-high 16 points off the bench on 5-of-5 shooting. The San Francisco native added seven rebounds.
Junior forward Amanda Johnson added 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Oregon, while Jasmin Holliday recorded a game-high 10 rebounds and added a game and career-high six assists.
The teams combined to attempt 61 three-pointers, eclipsing last year's record of 59 set in Pullman, but four short of the record set against Sacramento State on Nov. 28, 2010.
Oregon scored 20 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds, while the Ducks also scored 22 points off WSU's 21 turnovers. The Ducks' bench outscored the Cougars' reserves 25-17.
Oregon trailed 62-50 with 9:38 left in the game, but the Ducks managed to hold WSU scoreless for over three minutes as the Ducks regained the momentum with a 13-0 run that gave UO the lead, 63-62, after a Kristi Fallin 3-pointer with 6:10 to play.
PREVIEWING WASHINGTON
Washington (6-6, 1-2) recovered from an 0-2 start to Pac-10 play with a come-from-behind victory in Corvallis on Thursday night, 55-52.
The Huskies have not won in Eugene since a 60-56 victory on Dec. 21, 2006. The Ducks' senior class is 4-3 all-time against the Huskies, and an undefeated 3-0 at Mac Court.
Kristi Kingma leads Washington averaging 16.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Regina Rogers - former high school teammate of Oregon's Nia Jackson - is averaging 12.0 points per game.
INJURY UPDATE
Oregon head coach Paul Westhead currently has all 15 student-athletes on his roster available to play.
LEADERS OF THE PACK
Amanda Johnson's 15-game double figure scoring streak was snapped in Tempe on Sunday as the Pac-10's leading scorer averaging 18.2 points per game, was held to a season-low six points. Johnson scored 14 points against Washington State on Thursday night, and has now reached double figures in 16 of her last 17 games dating back to last year.
The Santa Rosa, Calif., native is currently tied for the Pac-10 lead with six 20-point efforts, five double-doubles and five double-figure rebounding games.
Johnson is second in the Pac-10 averaging 8.8 rebounds per game, and is second as well in the conference averaging 2.9 steals per game. The junior forward has led the Ducks in scoring 10 times this year and 21 times during her career.
Junior point guard Nia Jackson poured in 22 points - just one short of her season high - in Thursday night's win over Washington State. Jackson has now led UO in scoring three times this season - including the last two games - and has recorded three 20-point efforts this year.
Jackson's 5.6 assists per game lead the Ducks and rank second in the Pac-10, while her 15.9 points per game rate fifth in the league. Jackson's 2.8 steals per game rank third in the Pac-10, and the Seattle native's 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the league.
MILESTONES
• In Thursday's 77-72 victory over Washington State, senior forward Nicole Canepa scored the 700th point of her career knocking down two free throws with 56 seconds left in the first half.
• In last Sunday's loss at Arizona State, senior Victoria Kenyon appeared in the 100th game of her career.
• Junior Jasmin Holliday needs to score just 10 more points to reach 500 for her career, while freshman Deanna Weaver is just two points of her first career 100.
• During the Ducks' 109-94 loss at Arizona on Dec. 31, Amanda Johnson eclipsed the 900-point threshold for her career after scoring a team-leading 16 points. In 78 career games, Johnson has scored 924 points for Oregon. If Johnson is able to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career this season, she will become the ninth player in UO history to complete the feat in their junior year, and the first since Shaquala Williams in the 2001-02 season.
• Currently, Johnson's 17 career double-doubles tie for seventh in Oregon history with Renae Fegent, and her 98 career 3-pointers rank 10th in UO all-time history.
• Junior point guard Nia Jackson scored the 600th point of her Oregon career with 17 points in the Ducks' loss at Arizona State last Sunday.
• Jackson became the first Oregon player since Corrie Mizusawa (Feb. 5, 2005), to record double figures in assists. Jackson posted the first double-double of her career with 17 points and a career-best 11 assists in Oregon's Dec. 19, 100-71 win at Saint Mary's.
DOUBLE THE FUN
Junior point guard Nia Jackson has reached double figures in scoring in 15 consecutive games dating back to last season, and has led the Ducks in assists 11 times this season.
Jackson currently rests second in the Pac-10 averaging 5.6 assists per game (25th nation), and leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.77.
The Seattle native's 15.9 points per game rank fifth in the Pac-10, while her 2.8 steals per game rank third.
Junior forward Amanda Johnson has led the Ducks in scoring in 10-of-14 opportunities this year. Johnson continues to lead the Pac-10 averaging 18.2 points per game (37th nation), and her 8.8 rebounds per game rank second in the league, while her 2.9 steals per game rate second (35th nation).
CALLING IN CANEPA
Senior center Nicole Canepa has reached double figures in her last three games, including a season-high 16 points in Thursday night's win over Washington State. In the Ducks last three games, the San Francisco native is averaging 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while shooting .722 (13-of-18) from the floor and .708 (17-24) from the free-throw line.
Canepa is expected to play in her 100th game for Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 15 at UCLA.
FULL-COURT PRESSURE
The Ducks are using their full-court pressure defense and up-tempo offense to disrupt opponents. Currently Oregon is forcing opponents into 25.9 turnovers per game, while the Ducks are second in the Pac-10 and fifth in the country averaging 14.0 steals per game.
UP-TEMPO OFFENSE
Oregon has reached triple digits in scoring three times this season, and is currently averaging 86.5 points per game to lead the Pac-10 and rank third in the nation.
The Ducks' 7.8 three-pointers per game lead the Pac-10 and rank 20th in the nation, while UO's 17.1 assists per game rank third in the conference and 19th in the nation.
THE STARTING FIVE
Head coach Paul Westhead's starting five has a new look for the 2010-11 season. The Ducks returned three starters from last year's squad, including Nia Jackson, Amanda Johnson and Victoria Kenyon, but lost guards Taylor Lilley and Micaela Cocks to graduation.
Oregon's first player off the bench last season, junior wing Jasmin Holliday, now has a starting spot, and is averaging 9.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. At shooting guard, junior college transfer Ashley Buis has knocked down 23 three-pointers, and is averaging 7.8 points per game, having reached double figures in six contests.
THE ROOKIES
Oregon head coach Paul Westhead has been adamant about using a deep bench in non-conference play this season. All five newcomers, including four freshmen, have seen action on the floor.
Deanna Weaver, who can play either forward position, is currently averaging 8.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game off the bench. Guard Ariel Thomas is averaging 5.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
CALLING IN THE RESERVES
Oregon has scored 1,211 points this season, with 405 of those points coming from the reserves. In 14 games, Oregon's bench has outscored the opponent's bench 405-303. The Ducks' reserves have been outscored only twice this season, and UO has an 1-1 record in those games. Oregon is 9-2 when its bench outscores the opponent, and 0-1 when the teams' benches are equal in points scored.
WALKING THE RED CARPET
Conference play hasn't begun, but award season has. Amanda Johnson was named Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week on Nov. 29, after helping Oregon to a 3-1 record during the week of Nov. 22-28.
Johnson was voted the Oregon Invitational's Most Valuable Player, and led the Ducks in scoring (20.5 ppg), rebounding (10.8 rpg), steals (15) and blocks (6) during UO's four games from Nov. 22-28.
Junior point guard Nia Jackson was also named to the Oregon Invitational all-tournament team after averaging 17.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game.
ON AND OFF THE COURT
Junior Amanda Johnson returns as one of Oregon's most experienced student-athletes, leading the returners in several career categories; points, scoring average, field goals made, 3-point field goals made, rebounds and steals.
Off the court last season, Johnson flourished in the classroom, becoming the first Oregon women's basketball player since 1990 to be named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® University Division second team. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native, was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team, and was awarded the Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy, given annually to a University of Oregon sophomore for excellence in athletics, scholarship and citizenship.
During the summer, Johnson was awarded her undergraduate degree Summa Cum Laude, graduating in the top two percent of her class with a double major in psychology and sociology. She is now pursuing her master's in couples and family therapy.
On the court last year, Johnson was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention after averaging 12.7 points per game with a team-leading (3rd Pac-10) 8.5 rebounds per game. Her 290 total rebounds tied for ninth in Oregon's single-season record book, and she also finished the season with 11 double-doubles, 24 double-figure scoring games and five 20-point efforts.
The Ducks (10-4, 1-2) are hosting the final basketball game to ever be played at Mac Court on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Washington in town. Oregon will look to even its Pac-10 record with a win over the Huskies.
