EUGENE – Posting its second-best round ever, the No. 29 University of Oregon women's golf team opened action Friday in the Stanford Intercollegiate tied for fourth place against a host of the nation's top teams.
On the par 71, 6,148-yard course, UO shot a season-best two-under score of 282 after it counted two under-par scores and another at even-par. The young Duck contingent ended only three strokes shy of its best ever tally – a five-under 283 in the 2009 UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational.
Overall, No. 1 UCLA was tied for the lead with No. 36 Washington with seven-under scores of 277. No. 10 Vanderbilt followed in third place (281), and No. 50 Stanford was tied with UO in fourth place (282) in the 16-team field that featured six top-10 teams and three more ranked top 30 this week by Golfstat.
Duck freshman Cassy Isagawa continued her impressive fall run and was tied for fourth overall with a four-under 67. Her fifth round of par or better this season stood as her season best by three strokes, and tied the sixth-best score in school history.
"Today was a great day," Isagawa said, "and I was pretty satisfied overall. I wasn't hitting the ball the greatest, but I kept at it and still stuck some pins, made some putts and hit a lot of greens. My best shot came on the fourth hole when I knocked it within six inches of the pin from 146 feet out."
The Wailuku, Hawai'i native ended with six birdies Friday on holes #4, 7-9, 13, 18, 10 par scores (#1-3, 5-6, 10-12, 16, 17), and two bogeys (#14-15).
"The course is very scoreable," Isagawa said. "They said it played shorter today and that might have been why there so many good scores. Weather-wise, it was in the 80s, not my most preferred temperature, but it was fine. Everybody on our team did great today, and we're looking forward to two more rounds."
Junior Cheyenne Hickle followed in a tie for 13th place (70), thanks to her first under-par round of the campaign and fourth career-wise. The Gilbert, Ariz., native shot a season-high six birdies (#1, 2, 8, 11, 12, 17), seven pars (#5, 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 18) and five bogeys (#3, 4, 6, 9, 15).
Freshman Cali Hipp finished one stroke back with her season best score (71) - the first par round of her young Duck career - and was tied for 24th overall.
Senior Ashley Edwards followed in a tie for 56th place (74), and sophomore Raphaela Dyer was tied for 73rd place overall (76).
Glancing at the remaining Duck scorecards, their birdie/par counts follow – Hipp (2/14), Edwards (1/13) and Dyer (-/14).
"It was fun to see different people step up," Oregon head coach Ria Scott said. "Cali made her way back into the lineup. Cheyenne made six birdies, so it was fun to see her hit it consistently, and Cassy had another great day. Ashley and Raffi are hungry for a little redemption. They know this course, and just need to trust parts of their game a little more. We were paired with the second- and eighth-ranked teams in the nation (Oklahoma State and USC) so it was fun to play with them and hold our own."
Overall on the individual leaderboard, Vanderbilt's Alex Marina paced the field by one stroke with her six-under 65. The Washington duo of SooBin Kim and Sadena Parks followed in a second-place tie (66), and three players were tied for fourth place with four-under scores of 67.
