STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (12-2) shut out San Jose State (8-6) for the second straight day behind the pitching of sophomore Jessica Moore.
The Sutter, Calif., native (6-1) pitched the first six innings, struck out seven, walked four and allowed three hits. Junior Samantha Skillingstad worked the final inning, struck out two and allowed no hits.
After being held hitless the first three innings, Oregon got on the board in the fourth inning after sophomore Kaylan Howard reached on an error on a bunt. She advanced to third base on a double by freshman Kailee Cuico, then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Kelsey Chambers. Senior Cortney Kivett, a pinch-runner for Cuico at third base, scored in similar fashion on a fly ball to left field by senior Monique Fuiava for UO's second and final run of the inning.
Chambers became the eighth Duck to knock in a game-winning RBI this year, and only player has more than one - sophomore Samantha Pappas (2).
In the fifth and seventh innings, Pappas and junior Lindsey Chambers followed with three- and one-homers off the bench - their fourth and second of the season, respectively.
For SJSU, starter Elyssa Fox (2-3), pitched the first four innings, struck out three, walked two, allowed four hits, and three of her five runs allowed were earned. After she gave up the three-run shot to Pappas, Janessa Gutierrez pitched final three innings, struck out two, walked one, yielded three hits, and her run allowed was earned. At the plate, Moore held the Spartans hitless until a softly hit liner through the right side in the the fourth inning. SJSU's other two hits came in the sixth and followed a walk to load the bases with one out. However, senior Kaitlin Vitek nabbed a sinking line drive in left field and threw to second base to complete the double play and easily beat the runner back who hadn't tagged.
Oregon is now 2-1 in the tourney after it beat SJSU, 8-0, in five innings yesterday behind a one-hitter by Moore. UO also played Pacific immediately before and lost 4-2.
Looking ahead, UO plays Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. at Bill Simoni Field.
