Ducks Tied for Second After Round 1 at USC Collegiate
02/28/11 | Men's Golf
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- The University of Oregon men's golf team sat tied for second place after the opening round of the USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch C.C., utilizing a 4-under 67 by Robbie Ziegler to shoot 2-under 282 - two strokes off the pace set by top-ranked UCLA.
The 15-team field started Round 2 this afternoon at the 6,869-yard, par 71 course and will complete the 54-hole event on Tuesday.
Ziegler, a redshirt sophomore from Canby, Ore., shot his lowest round as a collegian to share first place with the Bruins' Patrick Cantlay. He is attempting to match teammate Eugene Wong's medalist performance at the 2010 USC Collegiate, a tournament won by the Ducks.
As for Wong, the junior from North Vancouver, B.C., was tied for 24th at 1-over through 18 holes, but still within striking distance of the lead as the course played very tough in the opening round with only 13 of 80 golfers breaking par.
Andrew Vijarro ranked second among the Ducks and stood tied for 14th overall with an even par 71, while UO's number one golfer, Daniel Miernicki, was tied with Wong at 1-over.
Jack Dukeminier was Oregon's high man with a 5-over 76, meaning his tally did not count toward the team score. Dukeminier tied for 62nd among individuals after Round 1.
UO was tied with No. 15 San Diego State, one shot better than both the 23rd-ranked Trojans and UC Davis. No. 17 Stanford was sixth at 1-over 285.
The start of the first round was delayed due to frost, which may push the completion of Round 2 into Tuesday morning. For scoring updates, visit www.Golfstat.com.
