Ducks Fly Past Pilots, 7-0
03/13/11 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE – A return home proved to be just what the Oregon men's tennis team needed as it swept singles play and won the doubles point in a 7-0 win over Portland at the Student Tennis Center on Saturday.
The victory snaps a brief two-match losing skid for the Ducks, who improve to 9-4 in dual play.
“We played very well in singles and doubles play,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “We took care of business in all phases against a good Portland team who was 9-1 coming into today.”
UO took care of the doubles point in quick fashion with wins out of its top two pairings. Douglas Mayeda and Aaron Clissold played an outstanding match, winning eight straight games after dropping the first one for an 8-1 victory. Alex Rovello and Robin Cambier won five straight after also losing the first game and closed with an 8-4 victory to secure the first point.
Cambier and Baptiste Faynot got through their singles matches in quick fashion, losing only seven games combined in a pair of straight-set wins. Cambier opened the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bryan Thorp at No. 3 while Faynot dispatched Geoff Hernandez at No. 2 by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
Alex Rovello earned his ninth dual win with a straight set win over Alex Ferrero, though the Pilots' top player made the freshman earn the clinching set in a tiebreaker in a match that finished 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in favor of Rovello.
The bottom half of the Ducks' lineup showed impressive determination in their matches as Jose Izquierdo, Duncan MacDonald-Korth and Clissold all won three-set battles. Izquierdo and MacDonald-Korth rallied from first-set losses at No. 4 and 5, respectively, with Izquierdo getting past Michel Hu Kwo (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) and MacDonald-Korth outlasted Ratan Gill (2-6, 6-4, 7-5). Clissold rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the first set in a tiebreaker and ended up taking Justin Guay in a super tiebreaker (7-6 [7-5], 6-7 [4-7], 10-5).
Oregon is off until March 21 when it travels to St. Mary's.
