04/17/11 | Track and Field
Walnut, Calif. - Freshman English Gardner broke the school record in the 100 meters as the Duck women made their marks all over the school record book Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
In the Olympic Development section of the 100 meters, Gardner blazed to the finish in 11.30 to easily win despite running into a slight head wind. USC's Jessica Davis was second in 11.40. Gardner, from Voorhees, N.J., broke teammate Amber Purvis' record time of 11.38 set in 2009.
Not to be outdone, Purvis was the top collegian in the 100 meters Invitational section. Carmelita Jeter of Nike won that race in 10.99, followed by Consuella Moore in 11.81, Ginnie Crawford of Nike in 11.36 and Purvis in 11.40.
Gardner and Purvis teamed with Mandy White and Jamesha Youngblood to finish sixth in the Invitational 4x100 meter relay in 44.09. That was the second-fastest time in school history.
Freshman Laura Roesler was sixth in the 800 meters in a collegiate-best 2:05.05. That was the ninth-fastest time in school history.
Roesler and Purvis then teamed with Chizoba Okodogbe and Phyllis Francis to win the 4x400 meter relay in 3:32.63, which was the third fastest time in school history.
In the long jump, Youngblood went a season-best 21-2/6.45m to finish fourth in the Invitational section.
