OREGON IS WINNING CLOSE GAMES THIS SEASON
Oregon is 7-0 this season in games decided by fewer than 10 points (2-0 in games decided by less than five points). The Pac-12 team with the next best record in games decided by less than 10 points is Colorado (6-3).
In those tight games, the Ducks had the advantage in all three shooting percentages (UO / Opponent): overall field goal percentage (47.7 / 43.1), 3-point percentage (38.4 / 31.4) and free throw percentage (70.9 / 69.0).
Oregon has closed-out several games on the free throw line. The Ducks are shooting 89.8 percent (40-of-44) from the charity stripe in the final five minutes of games decided by less than 10 points. A stark difference from the 68.1 percent (265-of-389) they are making on the season.
Devoe Joseph (8-of-8), Garrett Sim (10-of-10) and E.J. Singler (12-of-12) have combined to go a perfect 30-of-30 in those late-game free throw situations.
OREGON'S RECORD WHEN...
The Ducks are 11-1 this season when shooting for a better percentage than their opponent and 10-1 when holding a halftime lead. Oregon is 6-1 when committing fewer turnovers and is 6-1 when out-rebounding the opposition (more records breakdown on page 4).
SINGLER IS OREGON'S MR. CONSISTENCY
Junior forward E.J. Singler has registered team-highs with 215 total points (12.6 ppg) and 89 total rebounds (5.2 rpg). Singler has taken -- and made -- the most shots of any Duck this season (72-of-157, .459).
Singler has been particularly deadly from the charity stripe where he ranks second in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (.891, 49-of-55). Singler also ranks third in school history for career free throw shooting percentage (.861, 204-of-237). As of Jan. 9, Singler ranked 17th nationally in free throw percentage (leader is Nik Cochran, Davidson; .938).
Singler has reached double-figures in scoring in 14 of the 17 games this season. He's scored 10 or more points in 48 of his 88 career games at UO. Singler has also led the Ducks in rebounding on five occasions this season (and 27 times in his career).
He tallied a season-high 21 points (8-of-10 on field goals) in a November home win over SE Missouri State. Singler recently scored 20 of Oregon's 60 total points in a road loss to Washington, a game where he also grabbed a season-best nine rebounds.
The 6-6 forward from Medford, Ore., ranks among the Pac-12 active leaders in career statistics: sixth in career rebounds (446), eighth in points (845) and ninth in blocks (49).
With a 12.6 points per game average in 2011-12, Singler is on pace to eclipse the 1,000-point mark this season. Singler has 868 points in 88 career games for a 9.9 ppg scoring average. He is looking to become the 31st player in school history to reach the scoring mark.
Singler is one of two Ducks to have started every game this season. In fact, Singler has started the last 62 games for UO dating back to his freshman season. He started all 39 games a year ago and 22-of-32 games as a freshman.
DUCKS FEATURE BALANCED SCORING ATTACK
Six different Ducks have led the team in scoring this season: Devoe Joseph (five times), Garrett Sim (five times), E.J. Singler (four times), Olu Ashaolu (once), Johnathan Loyd (once) and Tony Woods (once).
Ten of UO's 11 scholarship players have reached double-figures in scoring. This has been done 14 times by Singler, 11 times by Sim, 10 times by Joseph, four times by Ashaolu, three times by Woods, twice by Jeremy Jacob, and once by Loyd, Carlos Emory, Brett Kingma and Tyrone Nared.
In addition, five different Ducks have dropped 20 or more points in a game this season (Sim and Singler twice, Ashaolu, Joseph and Loyd once).
JOSEPH KEY ADDITION TO OREGON LINEUP
Since becoming eligible to compete on Dec. 10, senior guard Devoe Joseph has averaged a team-high 15.1 points per outing. He's led the team in field goals made (56), field goals attempted (121) and minutes played (33.1 mpg) in those 11 games. Joseph has scored in double-figures 10 times, including last Thursday career-high 30-point effort against Stanford.
Joseph has bettered his scoring average to 16.0 points per game in the Pac-12, shooting 48.1 percent (13-of-27) on 3-pointers in those league games. He's also shooting 92.9 percent on free throws (13-of-14) against Pac-12 teams.
In his UO debut against Fresno State, Joseph came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points in 29 minutes. He paced UO in the loss to Virginia with a team-high 16 points. Joseph tallied 19 points and a career-high five steals in UO's win over Prairie View A&M. A night later he nearly registered a double-double with 10 points and a career-best eight rebounds against Stephen F. Austin. Joseph had 17 points and matched a career-high with seven assists in a win over Washington State.
BLOCKED SHOTS A FACTOR FOR DUCKS
UO has a 6-1 record in games where they tally four or more blocked shots. The only loss came in the season-opener at No. 7 Vanderbilt. In 16 of the 17 outings this season, Oregon has recorded at least one block.
Junior center Tony Woods (bio on page 22) ranks fourth in the Pac-12 with 26 blocks (1.5 bpg). As a team, UO ranks fifth in blocks (3.6 bpg). Woods had a career-high five blocks in the win over Portland State, the most blocks for a UO player since Dec. 31, 2009 (Dunigan at Wash. St.). That total is also tied for the best single-game effort for a Pac-12 player in 2011-12.
SIM AVERAGING CAREER-HIGHS THIS SEASON
Senior guard Garrett Sim is averaging career-highs in points per game (11.9), field goal percentage (.545, 72-of-157), 3-point percentage (.470, 31-of-66) and free throw percentage (.851, 40-of-47). He ranks third in the conference in 3-point percentage, fourth in free throw percentage and ninth in overall field goal percentage.
Sim's does not have enough made field goals to qualify for the national rankings (minimum 5 FGs made/game; 2.5 3-PT FGs made/game). However as, Sim's overall shooting percentage would rank tied for 43rd and his 3-point field goal percentage would rank 17th in the nation.
In 119 career games, Sim has 867 points (sixth) and 213 assists (seventh) which both rank in the top 10 of the Pac-12's active career leaders. In addition, Sim's 143 career 3-pointers ranks second and his 88 career steals ranks seventh.
Sim is on pace to match Joevan Catron's modern school record for games played (133). With a 11.9 points per game average this season, Sim is also on track to become the 32nd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
