EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 71 University of Oregon men's tennis team got back to their winning ways defeating No. 54 UC Irvine Anteaters, 5-2, on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
"I'm very impressed with how we bounced back," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "After serving for the match and having a match point against a team of the caliber like Washington, it shows me the grit this team has to come back and beat a No. 54 ranked Irvine team who we lost to 6-1 last year."
Oregon (9-1) advanced its combined doubles record to 28-2 this spring after sweeping the three doubles matches. Led by the combination of junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier, the Ducks have enjoyed the doubles dual point in all nine of their victories. Mullen/Cambier defeated UC Irvine's Fabian Matthews and Sam Gould 8-4 to move to 10-0 at No. 1 doubles this spring.
In singles, the Ducks received a boost from the bottom half of their lineup that had been missing against Washington last Friday (Feb. 24). Senior Jose Izquierdo defeated UCI's Ryan Cheung 7-6, 6-2 to garner a 3-1 lead in the dual. Junior Aaron Clissold, back in the lineup after sitting out against the Huskies, returned at No. 6 singles to kick off the singles scoring for the Ducks by taking down UC Irvine's Mika DeCoster, 6-2, 6-2.
"We've won ten straight doubles points and we're starting to play with a chip on our shoulders," remarked Schyllander. "We're going to get some well deserved rest and get back at it mid-week to get ready for a solid Radford team coming into Eugene."
The Ducks will have a week off before returning to the courts to face Radford on Monday, Mar. 5 at 5 p.m. at the STC.
