FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Alexa Peterson lined a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning to lift the No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (15-3) to a 5-4 win over host Fresno State (13-8) and cap first-day action in the Bayer Cropscience Classic.

In the first meeting between the teams since 2006, the Ducks staked their straight win in the series previously dominated by the fellow returning NCAA qualifiers to an all-time tune of 30-1.

Fresno touched Duck junior pitcher Jessica Moore (10-3) for a pair of runs in the second and third innings, although Oregon miscues didn't help matters in either innings.

The Sutter, Calif., native bounced back to allow only a walk and single in the final four innings en route to her ninth complete game of the season. Ultimately, the returning All-Pac-12 pitcher struck out six, walked two, gave up eight hits, and all four runs allowed were earned.

The Bulldogs struck in the bottom of the second after a lead-off single and throwing error on the play by the shortstop. Maria Sio stroked an RBI double to left center field, and a pair of singles followed to knock in the second run of the inning.

UO countered with two runs in the top half of the third inning. Sophomore Courtney Ceo and freshman Janie Takeda led off with a walk and single, and senior Kelsey Chambers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Kailee Cuico dropped an RBI single off the end of the bat into left field, and sophomore Samantha Pappas drove a deep sacrifice fly to deep center field for the Ducks' final run of the inning.

FSU added two more runs in the third inning. With two outs, a hit by pitch was followed by an Ortega RBI triple, who moments later scored on a wild pitch when she barely beat the throw back to the plate.

In the top of the fourth, Oregon cut it to 3-2 after Ceo doubled, then scored on the first collegiate triple by Takeda that bounced and caromed off the right center field wall.

In the seventh, Takeda and Chambers led off with a walk and single. After a fly-out and strikeout, Pappas walked to load the bases. Peterson went down in the count, 1-2, before she lined a two-run single up the middle for her first game-winning RBI of the season and silenced the crowd's cheering for a game-ending strike.

Altogether, Takeda and Pappas led UO in hits with two a piece, and each walked once. Four other Ducks hit safely once.

Fresno starting pitcher Michelle Moses (7-6) struck out seven, walked four, gave up eight hits, and all five of her runs allowed were earned.

At the plate for the Bulldogs, Ortega and Brooke Ortiz both went 2-for-3, and four others hit safely once.

Earlier Friday, Oregon cruised past Butler, 6-0, on freshman Karissa Hovinga's second shutout of the season. The Ralston, Neb., native raised her record to 5-0 on the season after she struck out a season-high six, walked three, and allowed only three hits.

At the plate vs. Butler, Pappas and Ceo each rapped three hits, while frosh Jamie Rae Sullivan reached base three times, thanks to a hit and two walks.

Takeda also boosted the team defensively with an impressive catch with two outs and one on in the sixth inning. The Placentia, Calf., native raced in 25 feet and dove forward for the grab just before the ball hit the turf.

Looking ahead, UO has a pair of games Saturday vs. Connecticut and Purdue at 9 and 11:15 a.m. at Bulldog Diamond. UO then caps the tourney with a final game vs. San Diego State on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
