No. 40 Ducks Sweep Saint Mary's, Advance to 12-1
03/10/13 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore.—The No. 40 University of Oregon men's tennis team swept the No. 73 Saint Mary's Gaels Sunday at the UO Student Tennis Center. The Ducks advance to 12-1 on the season while the Gaels drop to 6-6.
“From top to bottom, it was almost a flawless effort in doubles,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “That set the tone for the whole dual match and we played a complete match today. There wasn't a single spot that we didn't show up in or didn't play with the right focus and intensity. When you do that, you get a 7-0 result. My hat goes off to the guys."
Oregon swept the doubles round, earning its 13th consecutive doubles point and improving its doubles record to 34-3 on the season. Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen defeated Jesse Kiuru and Joakim Norstrom 8-4 in the No. 1 spot, while Alex Rovello and Daan Maasland topped Thomas Hunt and James Miarkiewicz 8-3 in the No. 2 spot, and Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu took care of business on Court 3, beating Tuomas Manner and Seif El Sherbini 8-1.
In singles, Mullen bested Jesse Kiuru 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the top spot, while Rovello won his first match in the No. 2 spot, defeating Joakim Norstrom 6-4, 6-1. Cambier handled Tuomas Manner 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3, while Maasland won against El Sherbini 6-1, 7-6(8). Randriamampandry defeated Samuel Bloore 6-4, 6-1 on Court 5 and Sardu beat Hunt 6-2, 6-1 in the sixth spot. The Ducks are now 60-17 in singles matches this spring season.
“Everybody stood out today. We took every chance we had and we executed. It was a complete team effort,” added Schyllander.
The Ducks hit the road next weekend as they travel to Houston, Tex. to take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday (9 a.m.) and Rice on Saturday (12 p.m.).
