MEN'S RACE
Edward Cheserek, Oregon – First Place
On the race…
“We came here today to try hard and see where we are now so we can go to Sunriver and put in work.”
On racing in early in the season…
“We looked very good out there, even though everybody's still out of shape. We're just starting to put in the mileage.”
Eric Jenkins, Oregon – Eighth Place
On his performance…
“I felt great until about 6k, and then every step was death. It was like, 'Woah, welcome back to cross country.' I'm glad I did it because it's good to know where you're at, especially this early. So now we'll go put in some good, quality work in for the next month until we race again. Hopefully I'll come away better.”
On the team…
“The rest of the guys, they're clearly doing well. I'm excited and the team's looking good.”
On the heat…
“You can never really say that as an excuse. But I'm assuming it's not going to be this hot in November.”
Matthew Melancon, Oregon – Second Place
On his performance…
“It was a good race. I felt like we got out pretty quick and then I settled in and was able to relax a little bit. But it was very dusty out there.”
On the race plan…
“The plan for this race was to make sure we had all of our guys together in a pack at the front so we could finish as many as we could in the top-five. We had I think four in the top-five, so we executed that really well.”
Andy Powell, Oregon – Associate Head Coach
On the race…
“That was a lot of fun. They executed well. We wanted to get about five guys in the top-ten, and it was really good to see them all running together. All in all, I like where we're at, but we've got a ways to go.”
On the team…
“I think nine of our guys were all up front running together. We have a really deep team, so I like where we are.”
“Edward's in good shape. A lot better shape than he was this time last year. We had a ways to go because he came in pretty out of shape. We haven't really started workouts yet, but we'll start those in a week or so and I'm liking where he's at.”
Lindsay Crevoiserat, Oregon – Seventh Place
On running in the heat…
“The first mile in you definitely had to relax. The last two miles were so hot and your mouth got so dry.”
On how she prepared for the race…
“We just made sure to keep cool. Everyone is in the same boat with the heat because no one is used to this. It's the first meet for both teams so there wasn't much preparing, other than seeing where we're at.”
On what she takes away from this race…
“I'm happy with how it went for me and I think we all just wanted to get a good competition in after the summer.”
Rachele Schulist, Michigan State – First Place
On how the race progressed…
“We went out together like we usually do. The first mile felt good and then I started to grind a little bit and it got hard. I just tried to keep it going. Leah O'Connor and I were talking to each other and helping each other.”
On how she felt given the limited amount of training time…
“I didn't feel awesome, but you rarely do unless it's a really good race. I felt pretty good but there is a lot more to come.”
On the heat…
“It's hot, but it only bothers you as much as you really want it to.”
Leah O'Connor, Michigan State – Second Place
On starting the season strong…
“It was okay. The thing that I've been working on and what I need to keep working on is my mental toughness especially in really hard cross country races. I'm glad it went the way it did today.”
On having Rachele Schulist as a teammate…
“I'm so glad that I have Rachele because she is the bomb at getting through the grind of races. When it gets really hard, that's when she shines.”
“There is so much I can learn from her. I'm so lucky to have her.”
Walt Drenth, Michigan State Head Coach
On his women's team…
“They do a nice job of running as a group, but it's still early and we still have a lot of ground to cover.”
On his thoughts of how his team is coming together…
“We talked about the strength of our team and really how we behave as a team. Creating that positive energy is important.”
On Rachele Schulist…
“She's kind of made a nice progression every year. She went home and had a good summer and it seems like she's made another step.”
Maurica Powell, Oregon Assistant Coach
On Lindsay Crevoiserat…
“After a long lay off I was pleased that she was aggressive but she might have been too aggressive. She went out a little too hard and misjudged the pace.”
“I'm pleased with the way she's come around. She's on the right track.”
