SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior Daan Maasland will be playing in the quarterfinals tomorrow at the ITA Regional Championships. Additionally two Duck duos will play in the doubles quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Similar to yesterday's contest, Maasland needed three sets to take down his first opponent of the day in Euan McIntosh (Fresno State). After dropping the first set, 6-4, Maasland came back to take the next two, 7-5, 6-2 and move on to the afternoon round.
There, he was pitted against Michael Genender of Stanford. Maasland had little trouble with the Cardinal, downing him 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. He will play Washington's Jake Douglas at 10 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In other singles action, Jayson Amos took his first match 6-4, 6-2 over SCU's Ashot Khacharyan, but he was tripped up in the afternoon by the Huskies' Mitch Stewart.
Simon Stevens also competed this morning. Playing against Cal's Filip Bergevi, Stevens dropped the first set 6-3 before battling back to win a marathon 12-10 tie-breaker in the second set. However, the sophomore was unable to keep the momentum going and fell in the third set, 6-2.
In doubles, the Ducks had three pairs in action today with two advancing onto tomorrow's quarterfinal round. Jayson Amos/Armando Soemarno continue their undefeated fall season as they took down Brett Bacharach/Adam Levie (UC Davis) 8-6. Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens also won as they beat Stanford duo Trey Strobel/David Wilczysnki 8-5. Brent Chin/Bartosz Sawicki were unable to hold off Nolan Paige/Maciek Romanowicz (Stanford), falling 8-6 in the round of 16.
