12/29/15 | Women's Basketball
HOW IT HAPPENED: With 4:52 left in the third quarter, UO held the 48-47 advantage and then went on a 23-5 run to lead 71-52 less than a minute into the fourth quarter. During the run, the Ducks sunk four three-pointers, three of which came from Lexi Petersen. Liz Brenner was also a spark off the bench, scoring all seven of her points late in the third quarter to help Oregon blow the game open.
Prior to that run, the Redhawks (5-8) gave the Ducks everything they could handle early. Freshman Tal Sahar knocked down three jumpers from behind the arc in the first quarter, giving Seattle a 26-23 lead going into the second.
“I thought we didn't have a lot of energy defensively in the first quarter,” head coach Kelly Graves said. “But I was proud of how we turned it around after that. The kids played harder and we tightened things up.”
With her team behind, it was Jillian Alleyne who stepped up in the second quarter. The senior scored the first five points to bring the Ducks out in front where they would stay for the remainder of the game. Alleyne scored 15 of her 17 first half points in the second quarter and she was nothing short of efficient, shooting 8-of-9 from the floor.
Alleyne then tipped in the opening bucket of the second half which was followed up by a lay-up from Jacinta Vandenberg, putting Oregon out in front by six. The Redhawks then used a 9-2 spurt to cut the Ducks' lead to one. From there, UO went on the 23-5 run that decided the contest and put the game out of reach for Seattle.
WHO STOOD OUT: Alleyne and Petersen led the team with 23 points apiece. The duo combined to be 20-of-31 from the floor and accounted for over half of the Ducks' offense tonight. Maite Cazorla continued to be lights out in the assists category, logging a career-high 12 while only committing two turnovers. It's the third time this season that Cazorla has had double-digit assists as she leads he Pac-12 in assists per game.
POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: Alleyne's 80th career double-double moved her into fifth all-time in NCAA women's basketball history, behind Oklahoma's Courtney Paris (128), Tennessee Tech's Cheryl Taylor (90), Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike (85) and Robert Morris' Artemis Spanou (85) … She needs eight more double-doubles to match Bev Smith (88, set prior to the NCAA sponsoring women's sports) for the UO record and five more to match Ogwumike's Pac-12 record … Alleyne has led the Ducks in rebounding for 70 straight games, a streak spanning three seasons …Oregon shot a season-low 28 percent from three-point range … The Ducks entered the game ranked second in the NCAA, shooting 44.4 percent from long range as a team … UO outscored Seattle 48-18 in the paint and had 27 second-chance points thanks to 22 offensive rebounds.
