Hawkins No-Hits Beavs in Run-Rule Win
03/14/15 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Behind Cheridan Hawkins' fourth career no-hitter, the No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team run-ruled Oregon State, 10-0, in five innings on Friday at Howe Field.
The Ducks improved to 21-3 (1-0 Pac-12) with the victory while the Beavers slipped to 19-7 (0-1). Oregon has now won seven straight games against its rivals from Corvallis, outscoring the Beavers 69-8 in that span.
How It Happened: After a scoreless first, Danica Mercado started the second with a double off the fence in left center. Three straight walks by OSU pitcher Beverly Miller plated the first run of the game before Janie Takeda ripped a bases clearing triple to make it 4-0. Janelle Lindvall followed with a one-hit single off the pitchers' glove to score two more runs. The Ducks ended the second with a 6-0 lead after tallying three hits, six walks and four stolen bases.
In the top of the fourth inning, Hawkins' perfect game ended with a leadoff walk. She walked another batter in the inning but did not surrender a hit.
In the bottom of the fourth the Ducks scored a run on an error by the first baseman to make it a 7-0 lead. Later in the inning, Koral Costa hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season, a three-run blast into the bleachers in left, to give Oregon a 10-0 advantage.
Hawkins finished off the run-rule win and the no-hitter with a perfect fifth inning.
“We talk about being aggressive and that's what I tried to do," Hawkins said. "Be aggressive, control what I can control and just attack to get outs for my defense and my hitters, so we can score more runs.”
Stat Sheet: Takeda, Lindvall and Costa each had three RBIs to pace the Ducks. Oregon had seven different players get a hit and six different players take a walk. Mercado and Costa paced the Ducks with two runs apiece.
Quoteable: “Tremendous job today," said head coach Mike White. "I really liked the intensity of the team. I felt they did a great job of being selective at the plate. We picked up six walks and a couple of hit-by-pitches then we made the most of our opportunities and scored some runs with some good RBIs.”
Records Watch: Hawkins threw her fourth career no-hitter, the most in UO history. It was also the 23rd no-hitter in school history. Hawkins previously had no-hitters against No. 17 Arizona (5 IP) in 2013, versus Seattle U (7 IP) in 2013 and against Ohio State (6 IP) in 2014.
Fun Fact: Pinch runner Lexy Beaudrie-Pierson has scored eight runs this season without getting a hit.
Up Next: The Ducks play game two of the three-game series against Oregon State at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
