EUGENE, Ore. – Behind a two-hitter for Cheridan Hawkins, the No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team swept a three-game series with Oregon State after a 9-0 five-inning run-rule win in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader at Howe Field.
The Ducks improved to 23-3 (3-0 Pac-12) with the series sweep of OSU while the Beavers slipped to 19-9 (0-3). Oregon run-ruled OSU in five innings in all three games of the series.
Oregon has now won nine straight games against its rivals, sweeping the Beavers three straight years. The Ducks have outscored Oregon State, 101-20, in that span.
Quoteable: Anytime you can get a sweep in Pac-12 play, you can kind of keep your hopes alive for the title," said head coach Mike White. "It's about percentage points. It's not about losses, so anytime you can bring up three wins it's great. It really helps.”
How It Happened: The Ducks jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. With two outs, Hailey Decker hit a three-run homer before Koral Costa doubled in Gwen Svekis.
Oregon tacked on another run in the second, to make it 5-0, when Jenna Lilley lifted a sac fly to left to score Nikki Udria.
Janie Takeda hit her third homer of the season, a three-run shot in the third, to make it an 8-0 lead for the Ducks before Oregon added on another in the bottom of the fourth.
Stat Sheet: Hawkins scattered just two hits and walked one while striking out five in the game. The junior picked up the win in all three games of the series. She is now 11-2 on the season with an outrageous 0.38 ERA. Hawkins has allowed just four earned runs (10 overall) in 73.1 innings pitched with 100 strikeouts.
Takeda and Costa each had two hits to lead the Ducks as Costa hit .625 in the series (5-for-8) with five runs, six RBIs and two homers.
Records Watch: Janie Takeda (86) is now just 10 stolen bases behind Sari-Jane Jenkins (96) for the most in UO career history. She's also just 18 runs away from matching Courtney Ceo in that category and 16 hits away from tying Ceo as well.
Fun Fact: Freshman Gwen Svekis entered Sunday's doubleheader with 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored on the season. After Sunday's two games, Svekis leads the Ducks with 22 RBIs and is tied for fourth with 18 runs scored. She is hitting .538 on the year (21-for-39).
Up Next: The Ducks visit Utah for a three-game conference series starting Saturday in Salt Lake City.
