03/23/15 | Women's Tennis
BOULDER, Colo. – Senior Nicole Long came through for the Ducks on Sunday in Boulder, when she was able to battle back to win her singles match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and clinch the 4-3 victory for Oregon over Colorado at the CU South Campus Courts.
How It Happened: The 56th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes gave No. 60 Oregon everything it had on Sunday in Boulder. In doubles play, the UO No. 1 doubles pair of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita continued their tear on the doubles circuit and defeated CU's pair of Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Kyra Wojcik 8-2.
Colorado, however, would tie things up after Vitaliya Alkhovik and Ashley Tiefel bested Lina Åkesson and Sofia Hager 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. Soon after, Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving were able to knock off Julyette Steur and Erin Strachan, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point for UO.
The Buffaloes quickly squared things up at 1-1 when Steur dispatched Rose 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot. The ever so consistent Kluiving gave Oregon its first point in singles play when she defeated Alkhovik 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot and gave UO the 2-1 lead. Åkesson then pushed the UO lead to 3-1 when she won 6-2, 6-1 over Strachan.
CU would then cut the lead to 3-2 after Tiefel defeated Paloma Gomez 6-3, 6-4.
Tobita and Ormeño Ruiz needed a third set to settle their match, but Tobita was unable to clinch the match and fell 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). With Tobita's loss, CU was able to tie things up at 3-3.
Long, who had clinched the doubles point for Oregon earlier, clawed her way back into the match after dropping the first set. After forcing the match to a third set, the senior made quick work of Wojcik to clinch the match with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Odds & Ends: The last time Oregon had won two conference matches was back in 2012 … Kluiving kept her dual record unblemished with the win and is currently 13-0.
Quotable: "It was a hard fought match on both sides. It was a complete team effort today. Everyone stepped up in different ways. As we continue to trust and believe in ourselves and one another, we'll continue to move in the right direction." -- UO head coach Alison Silverio
Up Next: The Ducks now return home for a pair of matches against the Los Angeles schools. Up first for UO will be the Trojans of USC at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27.
