Ducks beat UC Riverside in 13
03/25/15 | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 22 Oregon scored three runs in the top of the 13th and then held on for a 10-7 win at UC Riverside on Tuesday night.
How it happened: UC Riverside (10-14) pitcher Angelo Lingos (0-1) underhand shovel with his glove went over catcher Matthew Ellis' head and to the backstop when he tried to force Mitchell Tolman at home with the game tied 7-7. Tolman scored on the fielder's choice and Brandon Cuddy came around from second on the error to give Oregon a two-run lead with no outs. The Ducks (16-8) added another run on a RBI check-swing ground out by Mark Karaviotis.
Brac Warren (1-0) retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning to lock up his first career win. Warren nearly took the loss in the 12th inning. The freshman walked the bases loaded, with one intentional pass, after getting the leadoff hitter to ground out. Warren induced a bases loaded inning-ending double play when he got Alex Rubanowitz to ground out back to the pitcher for a 1-2-3 double play.
What it means: Oregon opened a five-game road trip with a win in game one of a two game series with UCR. The Ducks and Highlanders wrap up their series Wednesday and then UO heads to Arizona for a three-game Pac-12 Conference series.
Tolman's big day leads offense: Junior Mitchell Tolman was the star of Oregon's win going 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. The Ducks' second baseman hit a two-run home run in the second inning to give Oregon a 2-0 lead. After homering, Tolman picked up three more hits including a RBI single in the fourth, a double in the eighth and a leadoff double in the 13th.
Tolman finally reaches RBI milestone: Mitchell Tolman finally drove in his 100th career run when he blasted the two-run homer in the fourth inning. The junior, who ranks third all-time at Oregon in RBI, has been sitting on 99 RBI since March 7 when he drove in a run against St. John's. Tolman went eight games without a RBI before snapping the streak Tuesday with three. Tolman had just one RBI in the last 13 games before Tuesday.
Fanfest: While Oregon's six pitchers combined to allow seven runs they also struck out 16 UC Riverside hitters. The 16 Ks where the most by Oregon since the Ducks' pitchers fanned 17 Hawaii hitters on Feb. 18, 2012.
On deck: Oregon and UC Riverside wrap up their two-game series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Ducks will send Jacob Corn (1-0, 6.35) to the mound.
